Zhaleo to be NLA Deputy Speaker

Kohima, March 25: Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) MLA and People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) nominee, Zhaleo Rio will take over the chair of Deputy Speaker of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
The Assembly Secretariat had notified that the date of filing nomination was till 12 noon on March 24, and time for withdrawal was between 1 pm to 4 pm the same day, while the election was supposed to take place Monday.
However, being the lone candidate to have filed the nomination for the deputy speaker’s election, Zhaleo Rio, younger brother of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, is all set to be declared elected unopposed.
Party insiders revealed that Minister CM Chang and MLA K Toghuka Sukhalu proposed and seconded Zhaleo’s nomination.
A former bureaucrat conferred IAS in 1997, Zhaleo took voluntary retirement and was successful in the first attempt from 5-Ghaspani-II Assembly Constituency on NPF ticket to be member of the Assembly in 2013 defeating then INC candidate Hewoto Awomi by over 8800 votes. He was appointed as parliamentary secretary for sometime but became victim of the internal crisis within the ruling NPF party.
He re-contested the 2018 polls from the same constituency on NDPP ticket and got elected.
In the 34 member, NDPP-led PDA government, Zhaleo was the only MLA left without being included council of ministers appointed on March 8 and advisors appointed on March 21 last.
The present assembly comprises of 18 NDPP, 12 BJP, 2 NPP and one each JD(U) and Independent MLAs as PDA House while the only Opposition NPF has 26 MLAs led by former Chief Minister T R Zeliang in the 60-member. (Page News Service)
