WYH appeals for early declaration of Shamator district

KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, JANUARY 3: Demand for Shamator district continues as Yimkhiung people called for total shutdown within their jurisdiction from 9 a.m. to 12 noon today.
The Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) sponsored first phase of agitation this year passed off peacefully in Shamator, Pungro and other administrative headquarters.
Today’s shutdown agitation was organised in protest against State Government’s failure to concede to deadline served to the Government by the YTC to declare Shamator as district. The Council had set a deadline of December 31 last, or face more agitations.
The demand for Shamator district has become louder after the Government declared Tseminyu, Nuiland and Chumukedima as districts leaving behind Shamator which has been demanding for district since 2003. The YTC said since then several representations have been served to the Government.
The YTC has claimed that during the by-election to the Shamator-Chessore Assembly constituency in October last assured to upgrade Shamator to district.
The YTC said today’s shutdown was first phase of agitation.
Meanwhile, the Western Yimkhiung Hoho (WYH) has appealed to the Government of Nagaland (GoN) for the early declaration of Shamator ADC to full-fledged district for the upliftment and overall development and also for Administrative convenience of the Shamator Sub-Division and the entire Administrative circle that comes under the proposed Shamator District.
Stating that the Yimkhiung Tribe is the indigenous tribe of Nagaland which is the only tribe devoid of District, the WYH said the community deserve to have a district of its own in tandem with other recognized tribes of Nagaland after asserting the genuine land demarcation claim of the parties.
In a press release issued by its Media Cell, the WYH appreciated the kind decision of Chief Minister, Nagaland, and his Cabinet for declaring Shamator District “in principal” towards the Yimkhiung tribe.
Meanwhile, the WYH expressed apprehension that if the Shamator District demand is prolonged then there is likely eruption of severe communal clashes and alongside, the anti-social elements to take maximum advantage by means of creating the law and order situations, thereby disturbing the peaceful atmosphere.
Therefore, the WYH also supported the Shamator district demand and at the same time appealed to Government of Nagaland to address the long pending issue at the earliest.
