Wonder Woman Gal Gadot has congratulated Captain Marvel Brie Larson on the majestic box office opening of the Marvel movie. Gal posted a fan’s artwork of the two characters on her Instagram stories, with the caption, “I’m so happy for you sister, congrats,” and tagged Brie in the post.
Captain Marvel has registered one of the best box office debuts of all time, collecting $455 million worldwide in its opening weekend, along with almost Rs 50 crore in India. By comparison, Warner Bros Wonder Woman made close to $230 million in its opening weekend worldwide.
Wonder Woman was the first DC Extended Universe film to feature a solo female heroine, and the first to have been directed by a woman. Captain Marvel is the MCU’s first female character to get her own movie, although Evangeline Lilly played a titular character in Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Anna Boden shared directing duties with Ryan Fleck.
Critically, Wonder Woman was received far more enthusiastically than Captain Marvel, having been released in the year of the #MeToo movement. It remains the DCEU’s highest rated film on Rotten Tomatoes, and one of its highest grossing. Captain Marvel currently sits at a 79% RT score.
Brie will reprise her role in next month’s hotly anticipated Avengers: Endgame, after which it is rumoured that the character will take on a more central role in the future of the MCU.
