With this kind of support we will give our lives on the pitch: Sunil Chhetri

NEW DELHI, June 5: By his own admission, India football skipper Sunil Chhetri did not envisage the kind of support he garnered for the Indian football team after he sent out a video with a heartfelt plea to fill the stadium when his team plays.
The message stuck the right cord and with Chhetri slated to play his 100th international game – only the second Indian after Bhaichung Bhutia to reach the landmark – the outpouring of support was huge. With likes of Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar and every other celebrities and ministers coming out in support of Chhetri’s message, India’s second game of the Intercontinental Cup against Kenya was was a sold out affair.
And icing on the cake was Chhetri’s two goals in his team’s 3-0 win. Taking to twitter after a very special night, where he was honoured by Indian legends Bhaichung Bhutia and IM Vijayan, the skipper did not hide his emotions and wrote that the team will give their lives on the pitch if this is the kind of support they get every time.
This is what he wrote: “We promise you that if that’s the kind of support we get every time we play for the country, we will give our lives on the pitch. India, this night was special because we were in this together. Those in the stands shouting, and the ones at home cheering – thank you!”
“We are definitely going to fight and lose some games but if this is what we are going to get then we are going to give our lives on the pitch. This was something special,” the 33-year-old Chhetri had said after the match .”So good to see a jam-packed stadium and I am so happy everyone had a good night. Every time we are going to play for our nation we are going to give our 100 percent.” (Agencies)
