Kohima, AprIL 20: Joining hands in celebrating the National ‘Ujjwala Diwas’, Seyie Gas Agency Kohima today distributed new LPG connection free of cost to 30 eligible women hailing from BPL and SC/ST families in and around Kohima at D Block Panchayat Hall.
Proprietor of the Agency, Kuolachalie Seyie said that full set of new LPG connection were distributed in line with the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a scheme of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas for providing LPG connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households.
He said the scheme aims to empower women and improve their health by easing out the burden of cooking on firewood.
He said that besides the requirement of AADHAR card, residency proof and income certificate, intending local women applicants, those who don’t have any LPG connections in their name, have to submit the SC/ST certificate.
The scheme envisages that providing LPG connections to BPL households will ensure universal coverage of cooking gas in the country while also empowering women and also protect their health, besides an effort towards making the country smokeless, he said.
While the selection of beneficiaries would be from the BPL families only, preference would be given to SC/ST and weaker sections of society, the scheme maintains.
Quoting WHO estimates, Manager of Seyie Gas Agency, Kezieno said about 5 lakh deaths in India alone due to unclean cooking fuels. Most of these premature deaths were due to non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. According to experts, having an open fire in the kitchen is like burning 400 cigarettes an hour, she said.
AMK President Kevinourheno Seyie sharing the experience and benefits of LPG connection said that the scheme has given an opportunity for the women working in the kitchen to stop the use of firewood which is a major cause of deforestation and also has impacted the climate change. She also urged upon women’s to come forward and avail the benefit.
Thepfulhousa Shüya demonstrated safe operation of LPG at home.
After the distribution programme, intending eligible women were also highlighted on the requirements and procedures to be followed while applying to avail the benefit under the scheme.
Ujjwala Diwas observed at Jalukie, Longleng
As part of the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan, a programme of UJJWALA DIWAS of the Pradhan Mantri LPG Panchayat was launched at Jalukie ‘B’ village under Peren district on April 20. The programme witnessed LPG connection distribution to five PMUY beneficiaries, where a nominal amount of Rs. 1,600 was realised from the beneficiaries and which would allow six times free refilling.
Meanwhile, Chubawati Chang ADC, Peren in his speech stated that Gram Swaraj itself has the spirit of social harmony which everyone craved and that the government had made it a reality.
He also enlightened the villagers to be careful while filling up the forms of the Scheduled Tribe certificate, Indigenous certificate, Bank Account etc. in order to comply with the norms for availing different government schemes. He requested the Gas Agency to speed up the implementation process.
Earlier, Achintya Kumar in his introductory speech on UJJWALA DIWAS said that the scheme was introduced with a view to ease women’s burden with clean fuel. He added that the 738 villages will be taken up under this scheme and 45 villages under Peren district.
Dr. Tasile also shared the benefits of clean energy for environment protection. The programme was chaired by Namki Mpom, VCC Jalukie ‘B’ village.
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Camp and LPG Safety Clinic was launched at Longleng town on April 20 at Leinnak Gas Agency Longleng. The programme was jointly organized by the Supply Department in collaboration with Indian Oil – AOD, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Indane Area Office, Tinsukia in association with M/s Leinak Gas Agency, Longleng.
Lauding the Prime Minister of India for introducing the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala scheme for the benefit of the common people, SDO civil, D. Robin in his short speech called upon the beneficiaries to avail the facilities.
He informed that the scheme provides subsidies and encourages to do away with use of firewood which is hazardous to health and climate change.
He also lauded the organizing department and agencies for launching the program in the district.
President BJP Longleng said that Longleng was the first district to launch the PMU scheme in the state while the manager Leinak Gas Agency, Sumon Paul briefed on the norms and guidelines of the PMU.
