Transporters call off indefinite economic blockade

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 2: The Truckers Unions/Associations on Friday called off their indefinite economic blockade following a written assurance from Dimapur Deputy Commissioner, Rajesh Soundararajan in connection with the murder of truck driver, Jiten Gogoi.
A coordination committee comprising of 5 Unions/Associations, Dimapur District Truck Owners Association, Dimapur District Truck Drivers Welfare Trade Union, Dimapur Truck Drivers Union, Bokajan Truck Drivers Association and Lahorijan-Khatkhati Transporters Welfare Trade Society held a joint meeting today at Lahorijan pertaining to the blockade and discussed at length the written assurance given by Dimapur Deputy Commissioner.
The Deputy Commissioner, in a letter address to 3 Dimapur-based truck unions/associations stated that the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, has assured to expedite the investigation of the murder of Jiten Gogoi and bring it to a logical conclusion.
Regarding the compensation/ex-gratia to the family of the deceased, the Dimapur DC also assured that “compensation will be paid provided that the innocence of the victim is unequivocally established during the course of the investigation”.
With regard to the DMC lease system, the Deputy Commissioner stated that his office is not the competent authority to decide regarding the same, therefore the issue would be flagged to the Government for perusal and further directives.
The DC also appreciated the efforts of the Unions/Associations for holding consultations with various stakeholders on the issue, and requested them to call off the bandh.
Talking to Nagaland Page, President of Lahorijan-Khatkhati Transporters’ Welfare Trade Society, Khehuli Kibami said that the 3 Dimapur-based unions/association held a meeting with DC, Dimapur, wherein it was assured that ex-gratia would be paid to the victim’s family and the culprits involved in the murder of Jiten Gogoi would be punished.
She said that assurance has been given by DC Dimapur that protection would be given to the truck drivers while entering Dimapur. She said regarding lessee system, the DC has assured to take up the matter with higher authorities.
The 5 Unions/Associations thanked the Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, ADC, Bokajan, SP, Diphu, SDPO, Bokajan, and various other organizations for the prompt action and support for the just cause
The coordination committee also apologised to the public for the inconveniences caused directly or indirectly during the course of the economic blockade.
As soon as the economic blockade was called off at around 5.30 p.m., a large number of transport vehicles moved towards Nagaland, while hundreds of them are planning to enter Dimapur on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, the Lahorijan-Khatkhati Transporters’ Welfare Trade Society has provided financial help to the family of Jiten Gogoi and handed over cash amounting to Rs 92,000. The amount was collected from the members and sent to late Jiten Gogoi’s village through 2 members representing the society.
3 persons arrested
Dimapur Police has informed that the SIT has arrested 3 persons in connection with the murder of Jiten Gogoi on September 22 last and investigation is on.
