Tongpang inaugurates Mahseer hatchery project at Longkong


Dimapur, April 26: In collaboration with ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fishery Research (DCFR) Bhimtal, Uttarakhand, the Nagaland Fishery Department has successfully developed a Mahseer Hatchery project at Suteplenden of Longkong village under Mokokchung district. The project, first of its kind in the State, has been set up at the cost of Rs 15 lakhs aiming to propagate and to replenish the dwindling number of the species in the major rivers in the State.
Inaugurating the project on Wednesday, Nagaland PWD Minister, Tongpang Ozukum congratulated the sponsoring agency and the State Fishery Department for coming up with such a significant project to preserve one of the most popular and endemic food fish and sport fish in the state. He said with the setting up of a mahseer hatching centre the dwindling numbers of the species would be replenished.
Expressing concern over the use of chemicals and other means in fishing leading to extinction of this wonder fish, the minister urged the department to be more vigorous in bringing public awareness to preserve this species in the rivers. He said adequate knowledge should also be given to public about the feeding and breeding of this species.
Tongpang Ozukum said the hatchery unit should be nurtured and upgraded by the concerned department to ensure that people of the State are benefitted. He also thanked the owner of the Suteplenden Multi Farm, Imnutoshi and asked the department to extent all possible help.
Director ICAR-DCFR Bhimtal, Dr. Debajit Sarma, Dr. R.S Haldar Nodal Officer, ICAR-DCFR and Dr. Sudhir RAIZADA ADG (Inland Fishery) who also spoke at the function shared their happiness over the success of the project and said that they are always looking forward to undertake such projects for the benefit of the people of Nagaland. Dr. Sudhir Raizada who was the guest of honour at the inaugural function said ICAR-DCFR has taken up another Trout hatchery project at Tzulaki in Kohima district.
