Kohima, May 31: Ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) alliance nominee Tokheho Yepthomi has won the bye-poll to the sole Lok Sabha seat.
Making the official announcement during the press briefing in presence of General Observers, Dr J Ravi Shankar and Sandeep Hans, Nagaland Commissioner and Returning Officer for the bye-poll, M Patton said Yepthomi won the bye-poll by a huge margin of 1,73,746 votes out of the 10,18,842 votes polled.
Yepthomi polled 5,94,205 votes against the only opposition NPF nominee C Apok Jamir who voted 4,20,459. This is inclusive of the 186 ballot papers.
A total of 3991 votes went to NOTA, he said.
PDA comprises of NDPP, BJP, NPP, JDU and Independent while NPF was supported by Congress in this bye-poll.
Counting of vote for the bye-poll held on May 28 last was taken up today in 13 centres across the State.
As per the results made available, PDA nominee Yepthomi won in 9 districts, except for Phek and Peren districts.
Phek has been a strong bastion of NPF while Peren is Opposition leader TR Zeliang’s district. In Phek district, NPF bagged 47,630 votes while ruling candidate polled 41,136.
The biggest winning margin was in Zunheboto district with 37,573 in favour of Yepthomi. He polled 60,830 while Apok got 22,772 votes.
The closest margin of 680 votes was in Pughoboto election district where Yepthomi polled 6587 and Jamir got 5907.
Of the total 373 ballot papers, Patton said that 96 went in favour of Yepthomi and 90 for Jamir while 187 were rejected on various counts.
NDPP general secretary and chief agent of Tokheho Yepthomi for LS bye-poll, Prasielie Pienyu received the winning certificate from the Returning Officer.
