Kohima, May 10: On the last of for filing of nominations today, only two candidates have filed nomination for the May 28 bye-poll to lone Lok Sabha seat of Nagaland.
Nomination opened on May 3 last but no papers were submitted till yesterday.
Commissioner Nagaland, M Patton, who is also the Returning Officer for the bye-poll, said that ruling People’s Democratic Alliance submitted the papers of NDPP nominee and veteran politician Tokheho Yepthomi.
Yepthomi’s name was proposed by his supporter Ahovi.
He was accompanied by State BJP president Visasolie Lhoungu and NDPP Minister C M Chang while filing the nomination.
The opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF) has former Rajya Sabha MP and ex-MLA, C Apok Jamir.
Jamir’s name was proposed by NPF spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon.
NPF president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu and galaxy of senior legislators and party functionaries accompanied Jamir to submit the documents.
Scrutiny of the documents will be conducted tomorrow while the last date of withdrawal of candidate is May 14.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio yesterday announced that NDPP-PDA would launching the campaign from Dimapur district on May 16.
On the other hand, NPF president Dr Liezietsu today said that they would kick start the campaign after the scrutiny of nominations papers.
Lok Sabha bye-poll in Nagaland was necessitated following the resignation of then MP Neiphiu Rio to contest the state Assembly elections on February 17 last.
Rio contested the February 27 polls on NDPP ticket and was declared elected uncontested from 11-Northern Angami-II Assembly seat. (Page News Service)
