Statehood Demand Day on Aug 23

Agartala, June 22: Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) vice-president Brajalal Debbarma on Thursday said his party would observe Statehood Demand Day through mass demonstrations in all sub-divisions of the state on August 23, conveying their demand for separate state – Twipraland – despite differences with its ally, the BJP, over the issue.
Speaking to reporters here, Debbarma said his party would observe Statehood Demand Day like the previous years across the state.
The ruling BJP had earlier declined to agree with the statehood demand and claimed the alliance partners agreed on a “common minimum programme”.
However, IPFT supremo and Revenue Minister NC Debbarma said his party would never veer away for the statehood demand.
Debbarma also said the IPFT would form a committee and start the movement shortly for speedy formation of inter-ministerial modality committee.
The committee was earlier announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh in January this year to study the socio-cultural, economic and linguistic issues faced by indigenous communities in Tripura.
