State observes World Environment Day


Dimapur, June 5: World Environment Day was observed today across Nagaland and at Nagaland House, New Delhi on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
New Delhi: Nagaland House New Delhi staff observed the World Environment Day today at 29-Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road, New Delhi with Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya as the chief guest. The programme was chair by Principal Resident Commissioner (PRC) Jyoti Kalash.
The Governor highlighted the important of ecological balance on the occasion. He said India must immediately stop using plastic bags and plastic products as it affects the nature both in short term and long term.
After a short programme four trees were planted at Nagaland House by the following persons: Litchi Tree by Governor Acharya, Thatso Koza, Protocol Assistant and Umashankar, Mali; Guava Tree by lady wife of Governor, Vekhotalu, LDA i/c Garden and Kedilenuo Belho, Housekeeping; Litchi Tree by Principal Resident Commissioner, Jyoti Kalash, George Abraham, joint secretary to Governor and Keviletuo Sanchu, Cook and Guava Tree by Deputy Resident Commissioner, Kethosituo Sekhose, Kevizeü Rio, ASI and Abel Ayemi, Receptionist.
The Governor also provided light refreshment to all the participants.
Mon: Mon District observed World Environment Day today at Council Hall, Mon which was jointly organised by Konyak Students Union and District Legal Services Authority Mon under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”
N. Mannon K, Legal Aid Counsel DLSA Mon, in her keynote address, mentioned that taking care and protecting the environment is the duty of all human being. Every day the environment should be taken care and even in our daily-life activities we should know how to use electricity and water judiciously and protect wild life. Stop using plastic which is non degradable and harmful to the environment, she added.
Different schools and college of Mon town participated in the World Environment Day programme and after the function saplings of trees were distributed to all the Schools and College for the plantation drive of the Day. Forest Department, Mon contributed two thousand saplings of trees for the plantation drive in Mon town.
Kiphire: With the rest of the world, Kiphire District observed World Environment Day. The students of Kiphire town participated by marching in the streets to create awareness and also conducted social work.
Phek: Along with the rest of the world Phek Forest Division observed World Environment Day at Royal Foundation School, Phek Town jointly organized by Forest Department, Phek Division, 22nd Assam Rifle, DEF, Phek, Chakhesang Students Union, Phek Town Youth Society and private Schools of Phek Town.
DFO, Phek, Velatso Demo in his key note address challenged the participants to contribute for the well being of our environment.
Colonel R.K Vikram commandant, 22nd Assam Rifle, Phek, in his speech shared the harsh reality of random felling of trees in Nagaland and the need to change our mindset and habits so as to save our mother Earth.
Dr. NM Mansury, SP Phek enlightened on the hazard of plastic pollution and the method to combat plastic to save our planet for future generation.
Cash/material and merit certificates were awarded to the students for easy and painting competitions.
Wokha: Libemo Memorial School observed World Environment day with full enthusiasm by students and teachers under the theme “Plastic Pollution! Kick the Habit”.
The day began with “Fun Run” a mini marathon from students of classes 9 and 10 along with teaching staff which was organised in collaboration with 28th Assam Rifles, the Aesthetic and Eco Club of the school.
The school also organized events such as craft-making from plastic waste, painting competition, environment- related video viewing and tree plantation drive.
Peren: Peren District observed World Environment Day on the theme ‘beat plastic pollution’. The programme was organized by District administration Peren and Department of Rural Development, Peren in collaboration with the Bridge Team One, Peren Students Union and Peren Town Youth Organization.
Project Director, DRDA, Keyirangding Hegui, NCS in his keynote address encouraged the students on their responsibilities to maintain and preserve the environment. The observation of this day should not be just a day but it should be continued throughout the year in order to conserve nature, he added.
To mark the occasion, varieties of pine trees were planted in all the nine wards in Peren Town.
Bhandari: World Environment day was observed at Bhandari at the Office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhandari, which was organised by the District Administration and the Department of EF&CC, Merapani range under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
During the programme ADC Bhandari, Tiameren Chang called upon the head of departments and the leaders of NGOs present to rededicate in their effort to reach out to lessen mass deforestation by starting to plant more trees in an around their surroundings.
Range Officer, Merapani, Punseni Khing also spoke on climate change and global warming and stated that we should be responsible caretakers of the nature to preserve, conserve and protect the environment for safety of mankind instead of destroying it with greed and wanton destruction.
After the programme the Officers of all the departments under the Bhandari sub-division carried out plantion drive led be ADC, Tiameren Chang at the Forest Department’s land at Longayim Village area.
Jalukie: Jalukie Town head offices, political leaders and leaders from various civil societies, women, youth and business communities celebrated World Environment Day 2018 at Traffic police point. The day was marked by a short program at Town Auto parking area followed by distribution of tree saplings along with tree guards.
The function was chaired by T. Lankon, SDO Civil. Key note address was delivered by Dr. Sentitula, IFS, DFO Peren.
Tening: Office of the Information Assistant, Tening observed World Environment Day 2018 on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” at the office premises.
Fruit trees were planted in the office compound for afforestation cause, beautification and yield.
Changtongya: The Christian Standard Higher Secondary School Changtongya Town observed World Environment Day at the school Multi-Purpose Hall which was organised by the school Eco Club.
Student participated in different competition like painting, paper bag making, container painting and essay writing based on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.”
Chozuba: Joining along with the rest of the world, the Sub-divisional agricultural officer Chozuba (SDAO) observed the World Environment Day at Chozuba under Phek District on June 5.
Prior to the celebration, a talk on world environment day was delivered by agriculture inspector Mhalevilie Thorie.
To mark the occasion, the officers also planted trees at the office premises.
Kezo Basa: The launching programme of village adoption under District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) cum observation of World Environment Day was held today at Kezo Basa under 15 Southern -II Assembly constitiuncy, Kohima.
Speaking on the occasion, Er Zale Neikha, Advisor for Youth Resources & Sports, highlighted about the concept and vision of the village adoption program under DPDB Kohima and requested both the village adoption committee (VAC) members & the citizen of the Kezo Basa to work unitedly in all front of the projects & activities to be taken up and assured all support from his side.
Earlier the welcome address was delivered by Dievi Naki, Chairman Kezo Basa.
After the programme, Advisor Neikha planted tree sapling in observing the world environment day.
AAN: Anglers Association Nagaland and Department of Fisheries observed World Environment Day along with the rest of the world with the theme “Beat the plastics pollution” today at Fisheries Department Complex, Nagarjan, Dimapur.
Kevisa Kense, Director, Fisheries and AAN President led the campaign programme. The main highlights of the programme were banner campaign, tree plantation and cleanliness drive.
KVSU: Kohima Village Students Union (KVSU) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology observed the World Environment Day on Tuesday by distributing eco-friendly, biodegradable trash bags to all the shops and Government schools in the jurisdiction of Kohima village creating awareness and educating citizens about the hazardous effects of plastics.
KVSU president Khrietuo Pienyii said that in observation of the WED 2018 under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, the KVSU has taken the initiative to educate and create awareness among fellow Nagas to become smarter and more responsible citizen in using plastic in daily lives.
KLC: Kohima Law College observed World Environment Day by conducting social work, doing plantation and cleaning up plastic waste in and around the college premises.
NAYO: Northern Angami Youth Organization (NAYO) on Tuesday observed World Environment Day at NAYO office site, Chiephobozou at Northern centre, informed M Mathew Yhome, general secretary, NAYO.
DDLSA: The Dimapur District Legal Services Authority, DDLSA observed World Environment Day with the rest of the world in collaboration with Central Jail and District Jail authorities Dimapur on June 5. The team lead by Neiko Kanuo, Chairman DDLSA cum Principal District & Session Judge, Dimapur along with 9 Panel Lawyers planted more than 50 tree saplings at District Jail premises.
Another team lead by Ajongba Imchen, Secretary DDLSA cum Chief Judicial Magistrate, Dimapur along with 9 Panel Lawyers planted more than 50 tree saplings at Central Jail Dimapur premises to mark the day.
LR Dept: Along with the rest of the world, the department of Land Resources, Nagaland observed World Environment Day today. In Dimapur, staff of Land Resources Office organised an awareness campaign at Government Higher Secondary School, Chumukedima and along with the students, planted several tree sapling in and around the school campus.
The school was declared as ‘plastic free campus’ becoming one of the first schools to be declared plastic free. The declaration was made jointly by DoLR and school administration.
Later during the day, another programme to mark the occasion was held in the campus of Land Resources office Dimapur wherein all the staff led by its District Project Officer, Hekato Sema conducted a cleanliness drive and planted tree saplings in the office premises besides taking a departmental pledge to take responsibility to work towards a healthier, greener and liveable world.
ANTA Wokha: Along with the rest of the world, All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) Wokha Unit celebrated World Environment Day 2018 in line with the United Nation theme ‘Beat Plastic pollution’ by clearing drainages, plastic waste from DC Office ‘Y’ Junction to Kashmir Lodge ‘Y’ Junction.
The unit further asked the counters, shopkeepers and the residents to maintain cleanliness in the vicinity by not throwing plastic waste in the drainage.
The union has thanked the Administrator Wokha Town Council (WTC) for providing dumper to dispose of the waste materials. It also thanked the residents, shopkeepers, taxi counters, bus counters for their participation in the social work.
