Smart City fellows study Kohima traffic

Dimapur, December 20: The Team Plan of India Smart Cities Fellowship 2019 visited Kohima and held a stakeholders meeting on November 29 with the Kohima Smart City Development Limited, District administration, Kohima Traffic Police, Kohima Municipal Council, Transport officials, Bharat Electronics Limited and other transportation sector experts from the State.
The purpose of the visit was also to understand the traffic scenario before and after major events such as Hornbill Festival. The team conducted traffic studies in and around Kohima town from November 29 to December 2.
Through data collection and incorporation of feedbacks and suggestions from stakeholders, the team aims to further develop their tool with suitable parameters relevant to smaller cities like Kohima with hilly geographical terrain; Kohima Smart City being the first of its kind.
The India Smart Cities Fellowship is a work-based learning programme launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the Smart City Mission to provide young professionals from diverse fields of engineering, urban planning, architecture, information technology, education, finance and social sector with a platform to drive change. Out of more than 3800 applicants, 40 young professionals were selected through competitive selection. These 40 fellows are further subdivided into various teams working on various urban challenges and issues.
The Team Plan of India Smart Cities Fellowship 2019 has developed a ‘Real-time traffic monitoring tool for effective and efficient decision making’ which consists of a Dashboard and a web-app. The tool is being piloted in the city of Pune as a first case study under the Pune Smart City Development Corporation Ltd. and aims to scale up in other smart cities of India.
Under this, the tool ‘Enable’ is a visualization and analytical tool which would enable various stakeholders related to traffic within the city for efficient decision making. The tool has been developed under the mentorship of Prof. Bimal Patel, President CEPT University, Ahmedabad and under the leadership of Kunal Kumar, Mission Director, SCM and Rahul Kapoor, Director, SCM.
