Skill training for Rural Youth held at Mon

Dimapur, March 4: KVK Mon organised and conducted a 6-day Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) on piggery rearing and management at KVK Mon Aboi from February 21 to 26. The programme was conducted in association with State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) and National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE).
During the inaugural programme, Dr. V Akashe Zhimomi, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK Mon, highlighted the importance of skill development.
He also explained about the objectives of STRY and the relevance of skill development in piggery rearing and management. He encouraged the all the trainees to make the most out of the training.
During the week-long training, different topics that were covered included introduction to pig farming, basics of pig production, types and systems of pig production, breeds of pigs, selection of pigs for breeding, site selection for establishment of a piggery, housing, feeding and nutrition, healthcare, marketing and economics of production.
Visit to a progressive piggery farm was organised. On the final day the trainees were given group task on how to establish a profitable pig enterprise and finally evaluation of the trainees was also done to assess their competence in piggery rearing and management.
Dr Rongsen ACTO (Animal Science) was the resource person for the programme.
Altogether 15 youths (5 female and 10 male) participated in the training and on successfully completion were given certificates.
Follow up programmes will be initiated to give a hand holding to the trained youths and support them technically in engaging themselves in piggery rearing and management as a profitable enterprise.
