Dimapur, September 21: Students of final year UG programme from the Department of Psychology and Counselling, SJU visited Good Samaritan Old Age Home Meriema, Kohima to observe World Alzheimer Awareness Day on September 21.
The objective of the programme was to spread awareness about Alzheimer’s disease which is a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and eventually inability to carry out the simplest tasks. Alzheimer is one of the factors for dementia which is very common in Old age. Such cognitive impairment has a significant impact on senior health across the spectrum from issues of safety and self-care to the cost burden of care, either in the home or a residential facility.
Students initiated the programme with a number of activities such as presentation, song, dance, fun games and interactive sessions. Counsellor and Coordinator Mery contended that SJU is the first college to visit the home and interact with the elderly.
Altogether 29 students and two faculties led by Rebecca and Lucy attended the programme.
