Shillong to be developed as high altitude sports training centre

SHILLONG, JANUARY 6: The Meghalaya capital will be developed as a “high-altitude sports training centre” due to its elevated location (from the sea level) and suitable climatic conditions.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event at Laitkor here, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju said that Shillong is situated about 5,000 feet above the sea level and is, therefore, ideal for high altitude sports training.
The Meghalaya capital is actually situated 4,990 feet above the sea level.

Rijiju maintained that Shillong would be a place of pride not just for the people here, but for the entire Northeast. “It has suitable climatic conditions and a perfect platform for high-altitude training of athletes,” he added.
High altitude can help build endurance among athletes. Several countries around the world send their athletes to such places to develop their endurance ahead of major sporting events.
Meanwhile, the National Games scheduled to be held in Goa this year, have run into hurdles due to the pandemic. Rijiju said that this could lead to disruption of the schedule of the 2022 National Games, slated to be held in Meghalaya.
However, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is keen on holding the sporting extravaganza in 2022. Rijiju added that his Ministry would extend support to Meghalaya to achieve the objective. (Courtesy: AT)
