Sensitization on harmful effects of tobacco held

Dimapur, April 16: A sensitization programme on harmful effects of tobacco under the theme “Choose life not tobacco” was held today at AMK building Kohima
Chairing the programme, President, AMK, Kevinourheno Seyie said harmful effects of smokeless tobacco not only effects the health but also effects the economy and environment where hard earned money is wasted on tobacco, while tobacco plantation leads to deforestation. She called upon the people to quit tobacco for a healthy living and greener environment.
Highlighting on the harmful effects of tobacco, Dr. Arenla Walling, District Nodal Officer NTCP, stated that tobacco affects the whole system or parts of human body which causes oral cancers and other major diseases. She urged the participants to spread awareness in their concerned areas, and also thanked the Angami Mepfu Krotho for their support and cooperation during the various enforcement drives and trainings especially in the rural areas.
Stressing on the main provisions of the COPTPA 2003 Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products, Act 2003, Achila Walling, social worker NTCP stated that ban on smoking in public places includes government buildings, public transport, hotels, restaurants, parks, hospitals, school, libraries, auditorium, open auditorium, railway station, work places, cinema halls, discotheques, pubs, airport lounge and prison etc. She also highlighted penalty for violation of the Act.
The programme was jointly organized by DLCC and AMK. Participants from Chakhro Women Organization, Western Angami Women organization, Southern Angami Women organization and Northern Angami Women organization attended the programme.
