Sekrenyi Festival 2024 to be held at Dimapur

Nagaland News

Dimapur, February 20: The sprawling space inside the under-construction State Stadium (Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex) at Dimapur is undergoing a makeover to host this year’s Sekrenyi Festival, celebrated by the Angami community.
The President of Angami Public Organisation (APO) Razouvotuo Chatsu told a press conference here on Tuesday that they are expecting at least 15,000 people to attend the celebration. The number includes 500 invitees from various other communities.
“We celebrate many festivals; but of all, Sekrenyi is the biggest and the most important for the Angamis”, he said. APO along with frontal organisations is organising the festival.
“We are also inviting all the 16 recognised Naga tribes and other community leaders from neighbouring states like Assam (Karbis and Ahoms), the APO President informed.
Chatsu informed that Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will be the chief guest. Rio’s deputies-TR Zeliang and Y Patton-will be honoured guests. Three more Legislators-Jacob Zhimomi, Tovihoto Ayemi and Moatoshi Longkumer-have been invited as special guests.
He explained that Sekre means ‘sanctification or purification’ and ‘Nyi’ means festival. In the past, the celebration used to last for 10 days but has been curtailed these days “as we have embraced Christianity”, he said.
“Rituals and ceremonies are no longer practised because we have embraced Christianity. However, Sekrenyi is observed more importantly to preserve and promote the Angami’s rich traditional and cultural values”, he said.
