Dimapur, February 25: Sekrenyi, the premiere festival of the Angami Nagas, was celebrated today at Local Ground, Medziphema Town, where thousands from all walks of life attended. The festival was organised by Medziphema Town Mechü Krotho (MTMK) and Gaonburas (GBs) of Medziphema Town.
In a ceremony held to mark the event, hundreds of members from Medziphema Village in traditional attires entered the venue in procession to exceptionally demonstrate the cultural practices of the Angami Nagas.
Later, Akhoto Kuotsu, President, MTMK, chaired the function while Rev. Zhabu Terhüja, Pastor, BC’A’MT, invoked God’s blessings and Ningusie Meyase, Head GB, highlighted the importance of Sekrenyi festival. He remarked that the festival, also known as “Phousanyi” which literally mean “new body”, is chiefly meant for the male members of the community where the mortal body as well as the soul is believed to be renewed and blessed for the future after completion of rituals.
A choral piece was presented by Medziphema Baptist Khriesarüü Krotho (MBKK) while Salhou Miasalhou & friends rendered a folk song and octogenarian Pfüneinyü Nakhro, Former Chairman, Medziphema Village, delivered greetings and exhorted the mammoth gathering. Others who spoke during the event included local MLA Zhaleo Rio, IAS (Retd.), Advisor, Sericulture, Excise & Minority Affairs, GoN and Dr. Kevingulie Khro, former NPF candidate. The ‘vote of thanks’ was delivered by Salie Chüsi, GB, Ward-6, whereas Arho Niphi, Pastor, Sepruoliezie Baptist Church, Medziphema Town, pronounced the prayer for the public feast which followed after the programme.
