HYDERABAD, July 31: Saina Nehwal and the mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy moved into the pre-quarterfinals while Kidambi Srikanth, men’s doubles outfit of Satwik and Chirag Shetty, women’s pair of Ashwini and Sikki Reddy advanced to the second round of the BWF World Championships in Nanjing on Tuesday. The rest of the Indian squad tumbled out on the second day of the championships.
Ashwini and Satwik improved their chances of winning a medal with a fighting victory against 15th seeded Germans Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich 10-21, 21-17, 21-18. The Indians will face seventh seeded Malaysian duo of Goh Soon Huat and
Shevon Jemie Lai in the pre-quarters. Ashwini-Satwik defeated the Malaysians at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games.
Saina and Srikanth hardly broke any sweat on Tuesday. Saina outclassed Aliye Demirbag of Turkey in straight games 21-17, 21-8
while Srikanth ousted Nhat Nguyen of Ireland 21-15, 21-16.
However, men’s doubles pair of Kona Tarun/Sourabh Sharma, women’s duo of Meghana/Poorvisha, mixed teams of Pranaav Chopra/Sikki and Rohan Kapoor/Kuhoo Garg were shown the exit door.
Chief coach Pullela Gopichand said that despite a few reverses it turned out to be a good day for India. “I am impressed with the performance of our shuttlers. Saina looked good, Ashwini-Satwik, Chirag-Satwik pulled off good matches. The way they came back against tough opponents is quite impressive,” Gopichand told TOI. (TNN)
