NEW DELHI, December 3: Former India cricketer-turned-commentator has come up with a big statement, suggesting that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might consider Rishabh Pant as a potential successor to MS Dhoni in IPL 2025 in the event of the former Indian captain’s retirement.
Despite Pant’s ongoing recovery, he is anticipated to captain the Delhi Capitals in the 2024 IPL season.
Dhoni has enjoyed an illustrious career in the IPL, particularly with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The future of his IPL journey has been a topic of intense speculation. However, to the joy of his fans, Dhoni has officially announced his return to lead CSK in the upcoming 2024 season, putting to rest retirement rumors. Even at 42 years old, he remains a pivotal and influential figure in the league.
However, given the uncertainty surrounding Dhoni’s participation in the IPL for the 2025 season, Deep Dasgupta, the former wicketkeeper-batter, made a big statement in a video posted on social media platform ‘X’, formerly Twitter.
Dasgupta feels that one should not be surprised if CSK target Pant as Dhoni’s replacement since both are alike in terms of thinking.
“Don’t be surprised if they get Rishabh Pant by IPL 2025. MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant are very close. Obviously, Rishabh adores MS, and MS also likes him very much. They spend a lot of time together. Their connection and Rishabh’s thinking are very similar, considering he is very attacking and positive. He’s always talking about winning and what not,” said Dasgupta.
Pant, who is gearing up for a return to competitive cricket, recently joined the Delhi Capitals training camp in Kolkata. However, he refrained from taking part in the training sessions during his visit.
Pant last played for India in their Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur in December last year before surviving a near fatal accident when his car collided with a divider and caught fire. (TNN)
