Dimapur, May 31: Nagaland Minister Public Works Department, Tongpang Ozüküm paid a maiden visit to Longleng Headquarter and inspected the undergoing construction and repair works within the district headquarter on Wednesday.
The Minister was accompanied by Executive Engineer Longleng, Junior Engineer Housing & Mechanical Longleng, the Deputy Commissioner, the ADC and other Public and Government officials.
The Minister on his arrival was received by the Executive Engineer S.B. Angh and his colleagues and inspected on foot the entire district headquarter road which are under repairs. The Minister also visited all the roads that are earmarked for repair and maintenance.
Informing about the Minister’s visit, Executive Engineer S.B. Angh said that it came as a blessing to the district as it is a visit made by a concerned Minister in almost a decade to personally oversee the needs of the department and the people of the district.
Engineer S B Angh informed that Longleng division has around 12 important roads out of which the 3 main roads inspected today are selected on priority considering public convenience. The roads include the main town road which is about 2.2 kilometre, the Medical Road of about 1.3 km, and the road leading to DC Bungalow and its area which is about 1.8 kms are under repairs. He said that the government has allotted around Rs 1 crore for Longleng division out of which around 1.3 kilometres blacktopping of not less than 20ft road width in minimum is being completed and the rest are expected to complete very shortly. The work also includes construction of CC drainage and re-construction of culverts in various locations.
Engineer Angh said after the inspection the Minister expressed his satisfaction over the works carried out by the department even with limited amount sanctioned. The Executive Engineer disclosed that the Minister has assured to provide additional fund to the district if more pressing need arises.
Later after the inspection, the Minister held a meeting with the Department officials, the District Administration, the NGOs including Phom Peoples’ Council, Phom Students’ Conference and a dozen of District Public leaders.
Addressing the meeting the Deputy Commissioner Longleng expressed gratitude to the Minister on behalf of the citizens for bringing development schemes to the district, particularly for roads.
Further, the Phom Peoples’ Council (PPC) submitted a three point representation to the Minister seeking his favour for creation of SDO PWD (R&B) for Tamlu, upgradation of JE PWD (Housing) under Tuensang Sub-Division to SDO PWD (Housing) Longleng and upgradation of JE PWD (Mechanical) under Mokokchung Division to SDO PWD (Mechanical) Longleng.
While expressing gratitude to the Minister for his deep concern towards the development of the district, the PPC also requested Ozukum to provide enough funds for maintaining other roads. In these regard, the Minister assured all possible measures to fulfill the demands made.
The Phom Students’ Conference also apprised of the pending Longleng-Pongo road amounting to a project cost of Rs. 50 lakh, which was assured during the then Roads and Bridges Minister Vikheho Swu. The Students’ Conference said that the Department has sanctioned on Rs. 28 lakhs for the said work and the remaining amount of Rs. 22 lakh is yet to get sanctioned. Aware of the fact that the project is not under the present Minister’s purview, however, the Phom Students’ Conference urged Minister Tongpang to help appraise the concern authorities to re-survey the matter at the earliest.
Clarifying the doubts of the people on road repairs, Minister Tongpang informed the public that the present projects taken up for improvement of town roads are mainly to fill up potholes. However, he said apart from only filling the potholes his department is trying to give the best in almost all the districts headquarter with premix bituminous carpeting of the roads.
Earlier, the Executive Engineer Longleng, S B Angh said in 2008/09 the present Medical Minister S. Pangnyu Phom initiated some road development under Rural Development BRGF program after which no funds were provided for road repairs for almost the last 10 years, due to which about 2.2 kms of road within the main town was badly damaged. The Engineer said, the Department and the public of Longleng town is deeply grateful to the State Government and the concerned Minister for considering to look into the development of the district, and extended all possible service towards the successful completion of the project.
