Guwahati, February 29: The police on Saturday detained over 100 people who protested against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Guwahati.
The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and Students Federation of India (SFI) on Saturday had jointly staged a demonstration against the CAA in Guwahati.
The security personnel detained protesters when they allegedly were trying to block the roads in Guwahati.
One of the protesters said that police detained them despite them staging a protest “democratically and peacefully”.
Terming the new citizenship law as “unconstitutional, undemocratic,” the protesters raised slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the Centre and state. The protesters also demanded the Assam Legislative Assembly to take a decision against the Act.
The protesters also demanded the government to release all anti-CAA protesters who were arrested earlier.
The left-wing organisations also opposed the government’s privatisation policy and demanded to increase the budget fund allocation in the education and health sectors. (Agencies)
