Plastic waste management awareness at Wokha

Dimapur, May 14: Wokha Town Council (WTC) under Swachh Bharat Mission organized an awareness programme on plastic waste management on May 14 at Youth Centre, DBHSS Wokha.
ADC & Administrator WTC, Wokha Andrew C. Imti highlighted the various initiatives like inter school essay, painting competition and poster campaign undertaken to sensitize educational institutions across Wokha town. He urged the students to educate the public to discourage use of plastic. He also informed that Wokha Town Council will shortly be issuing notification banning use of plastic bags and other single use plastic materials.
Chief, Team Metamorphosis, Thungdemo Kyong said using single use plastic can be convenient but it comes at a huge environmental cost to planet and our lives. He emphasized the need for proper management of plastic to prevent further damage of our environment and life.
EAC Wokha, Toking Yimchunger urged the students to be the icon and agent of change for the success of the campaign/mission and spread awareness to make our planet cleaner and green.
In the programme results of the various competitions were announced and ADC Wokha handed over the prizes to the winners. Rendeno (Libemo Memorial School), Jeniren (Isaiah Ability School) and Nzanrhoni of DBHSS were adjudged the first second and third respectively in the painting competition. In the Essay competition Zujanbeni (Isaiah Ability School), Christina (LMS), Elisen (DBHSS) and Mhachan (LMS) got the 1st 2nd and 3rd respectively. Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha and Libemo Memorial School were awarded with the cleanest school.
Cloth shopping bags made by Eastern Self Help Group were distributed to various schools as sample pieces for alternative to shopping bags. The schools were also encouraged to produce more such bags in future.
