Phek District NCSU demands on-spot verification of ongoing road works at Chozuba Town

Nagaland News

DIMAPUR, MAY 22: The Phek District Nagaland Contractors and Suppliers Union has demanded an on-spot verification of the ongoing road works at Chozuba Town, which recently came to limelight after viral clips of alleged poor workmanship emerged, followed by an exchange of words between the local Legislator and the contractor concerned in the local newspapers.
In a letter to the Chief Engineer of PWD (Road & Bridges), the Phek District NCSU demanded the formation of a high level technical committee to inspect the ongoing work, ‘Upgradation of road from Chozuba Town to PWD office via police station, Telecom, Veterinary, and Agri to Yoruba-Ighanumi Junction’, being carried out under Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF).
According to the Union, the contract is worth Rs 22,42,28,000.
“On receiving complaints from the public through social media platforms alleging in compromising the quality of workmanship by the contractor Mr. Zakieneituo (Zakie) Angami, the Phek District NCSU had made an on-spot inspection on 17th May 2024. As circulated in the social media, the allegations of substandard works and using LPG gas burner and herbicide chemicals for covering up the inferior quality work were found to be true. “Whereas site Engineer was not appointed by the contractor for the work as well, which is mandatory for this kind of works. Such malpractice was the first of its kind in the knowledge of the Phek District NCSU”, the letter read.
The Union went on to state that the contractor’s “clarification in print and social media claiming doing the works as per the technical specifications” was found to be “blatantly untrue”. It also “condemned” the press rejoinder issued by the contractor against Kudecho Khamo, the local Legislator.
“As an elected representative of the 18th Chozuba Assembly Constituency, raising such an issue of public importance was not only timely but also in line with his duty and responsibility towards his electors. We appreciate the initiative that he had taken to serve the people with commitment and support his pro-active role as a responsible leader”, it stated.
The Union demanded the formation of said committee at the earliest and conduct the on-spot verification “in the presence of the public and the Union members”.
“The clarification issued by the Department was also not the current work but of the old ones. We condemn such act of mischief to mislead the public thereby adding salt to the wound. Further, the Union demands that the pending bills of the contractor be withheld until such time he rectifies the defective works and further works are carried out strictly as per the technical specifications to the satisfaction of the public”, it added.
If the Department fails to fulfil the demand, the Union stated that it would be “compelled to take its own course of actions”, in which case, the Department and the contractor concerned would be held responsible for any untoward situations that may arise.
