PAC NCD urges CM to enact stringent criminal law

Says, illegal collection affecting cost of living

Dimapur, September 11: The Public Action Committee (PAC) under the aegis of Naga Council Dimapur has urged the Chief Minister of Nagaland to enact stringent criminal laws to deal with illegal tax collections in Dimapur.
In a representation to the Chief Minister, through DC Dimapur, the PAC stated that the PAC had set up a Committee which conducted a study on the ground realities prevailing in Dimapur and brought out a fact finding report, which is appalling.
As per the report, it was found that from the smallest product to the biggest, illegal tax is being collected at every point of transaction. “A product from entry point to godown, to retail is illegally taxed, which triples the price of every product. The living cost of the citizens have been greatly affected as there is no price regulation due to illegal tax collection,” it stated.
The representation signed by Convenor, Vekhosayi Nyekha and co-convenor, K Ghokheto Chophy stated that the PAC, with the help and support of police department has been trying to contain the activities of illegal collectors by means of apprehending such criminals, but they get bail without any difficulty, which has demoralized the police force.
The PAC further stated that due to lack of stringent laws to book and punish the criminals, the perpetrators, trouble makers are set free within few days and lack of strict laws have become a big encouragement to criminals to commit crime without restrain.
Citing Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act 1999 and the Bihar Control of Crime Act, 1981, the PAC said Nagaland Government should also enact such laws as the crime rate is high in Dimapur due to its metropolitan status.
The PAC hoped that the Chief Minister would consider their request which would definitely bring change in containing all illegal tax collections and criminal activities.
