DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 30: The Public Action Committee (PAC) Dimapur has expressed solidarity to the various truck owners and drivers union Dimapur and Khatkhati/Lahorijan on their economic blockade that started on September 29, saying it can feel the pulse of transport unions who are always at the receiving end.
“PAC always stood against multiple illegal collection of money at various locations. PAC have long time back conducted market surveys in Dimapur and found that goods, transport vehicles entering Dimapur are levied multiple illegal payments by various quarters which is one main factor of price escalation,” it said in a statement.
The PAC said during the Operation check gate, it had collected hard evidence that a single item is even taxed multiple times.
“Surface transport is one of the main means of transportation to our state and our state solely depends on other state for all our needs! And the lackadaisical attitude of the Government failing to root out illegal collection ultimately is borne by the lay man who feels the pinch the most,” it said, while asking the Government to ensure that transport vehicles entering/passing through Dimapur do not face any harassment but are given safe passage from Dimapur to Khuzama.
Extending support to the transporters’ grievances that should be addressed without delay to avoid causing hardship to the citizens, the PAC appealed to peace loving citizens/organizations to support the transporters who have not only lost money but have even lost a life on September 22. “Mafiadom has no place in a democratic state,” it said while again condemning the September 22 killing. It demanded that the murderers killers be apprehended and given punishment deemed fit.
The PAC further reminded the Government that the “dateline given is ticking and PAC will not shy away from the desire of the society, peace, justice and equality.”
