Orgs demands unconditional apology from Tharoor for calling Naga headgear ‘outlandish’

Dimapur, August 6: The Naga Hoho has out-rightly condemned today’s statement of Congress leader Shashi Tharor for abusing the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi for wearing Naga headgear as ‘outlandish and hilarious’ which is inexcusable from a person of such a stature.
His statement though meant to be humorous shows the contemptuous mentality of some of mainstream Indians towards the northeast and in particular the Nagas, the Hoho said.
The Hoho said even in the past, Congress leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi have worn the Naga headgears and traditional dresses keeping in mind that India is a democratic secular country but no political parties or individuals showed such disregard and impudence as that of Shashi Tharor.
The Naga Hoho pressed upon Shashi Tharor to tender unconditional apology to the Naga people for mocking the Naga traditional attire immediately.
In this regard, it also appeal to the Congress leaders from Nagaland to find out the details and contact the concern persons/ authority towards resolving the controversial statements amicably on this pertinent issue.
Reacting to Sashi Tharoor’s statement, Nagaland Chief Minister tweeteed, “Nagas have rich heritage and vibrant culture. We are proud of our history and traditions. The Naga headgear is renowned and gifted with honour, defnitely no outlandish. Mutual respect makes India a great nation. One must apologize and withdraw statements that hurt others sentiments.”
Replying to Rio’s comment, Tharoor said that no disrepect was intended. In his tweet, Tharoor wrote, “No disrespect was intendeded, dear CM. The point was simply that when headgear is offered with honour to the PM everywhere, why reject only one type of headgear? What signal does it send?
The Bharatiya Janata Party has accused Congress leader Shashi Tharoor of insulting India’s Northeast states by saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wears “outlandish” headgear.
“I ask you why does our Prime Minister wear all sorts of outlandish headgear wherever he goes around the country or around the world? Why does he always refuse to wear a Muslim skull cap? Tharoor was quoted by news agency PTI as saying on Sunday in Thiruvananthapuram, his Lok Sabha constituency.
“You see him in Naga headgears with feathers. You have seen him in various kinds of extraordinary outfits which is a right thing for a prime minister to do. Indira Gandhi has also been photographed wearing various kinds of costumes. But why he still always says no to one?” said Tharoor at a seminar, referring to Modi’s visit to Nagaland in December 2017.

Union minister of state for home affairs, Kiren Rijiju, said Tharoor had insulted tribals and people from the North-East.
“I demand apology from the Congress party for insulting the people of India’s North East & Tribals. Shashi Tharoor described North-East people & Naga Tribal headgears as funny looking outlandish & hilarious,” said Rijiju, who is from Arunachal Pradesh, on Twitter.
“Shashi Tharoor insults the proud cultural heritage of the people of North-East. This condescension & arrogance towards the people of India have become hallmarks of @INCIndia,” said Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore on Twitter.
BJP general secretary Ram Madhav, too, protested the statements. “For Shashi Tharoor, Naga headgear is outlandish and hilarious. In his over zealous love for skull cap, Tharoor doesnt mind insulting d customs of d Nagas n other NE people.” (Page News Service)
