NWA announces slew of events till March 2019


Kohima, October 9: The Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) is gearing up to conduct series of events over the next six months, including its 50 years of its existence, participation at the national belt and free style wrestling and organizing various Naga style championships.
Briefing media persons at its office here, NWA president Neivikuolie Nicholas Khatsü and general secretary Vekhozo said that the most important event would be the 27th edition of Nagaland Wrestling Meet which will be tentatively held on March 5 & 6, 2020. During the wrestling meet, NWA will also be introducing Junior Naga Style (Under-16) wrestling championship for which every NWA unit can send 12 wrestlers, Khatsu said. He also informed that other non-wrestling tribes willing to send wrestlers for the junion championship are also most welcome.
Supplementing the president, Vekhoso said informed that aadhaar card and school cumulative record book would be basis age for the wrestlers, while those born before April 1, 2004 would not be eligible for participation.
50 years of NWA’s existence will also be celebrated around the same period, Khatsu said, adding that the jubilation would grand by bringing together the past officials of the Association and also bringing out a book on Naga wrestling instead of souvenir.
Meanwhile, the immediate upcoming event for the Association is the first ever selection of wrestlers for belt and free style national champions to be conducted at Khesoh’s Grabbling Academy at Grace Higher Secondary School, Bahavü on October 18.
The Belt Wrestling will be held at Hyderabad from November 21 to 24 for Cadet (16-17 years) boys in weight categories of 42, 47, 53 and girls – 38, 42 & 46. Junior (18-19 years) – boys 53, 59, 65 kgs and girls – 45, 50, 56 kgs. Senior men – 57, 65, 74, 86, 80+, they said.
They also informed that the National Free Style which is scheduled from November 28 to 30 at Jalandhar the weight categories for men are – 57, 65, 74, 86, 97 & 97+ kgs while for women it will be 50, 53, 57, 62, 68 & 76 kgs.
They said that in every weight category only the champion during the selection would represent the State, Vekhozo said while informing that besides the three wrestling units of NWA interested wrestlers from other tribes can also undergo the selection process.
Further, Khatsü informed that on the invitation of Niathu Groups, Naga style wrestling would be included for the first time in the upcoming Niathu Sports to be held at Niathu Resort Chumukedima on October 25. It will be an open event and attractive cash prizes are being arranged for the wrestling event, he said, adding that interested wrestlers can collect the entry prized at Rs 1000 per wrestler from NWA general secretary Vekhozo.
Khatsu also said that the 13th International Hornbill Naga Wrestling Championship would be held on December 4 at Kisama Heritage village. Besides other tourists participation, he said that wrestlers from Uzbekistan have already confirmed their participation, while wrestlers from Mizoram and Manipur would also be joining the championship.
