Accuses Ravi of attempting to ‘overthrow elected Govt’
Dimapur, June 30: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has hit out at Nagaland Governor RN Ravi over his recent letter to the Chief Minister of Nagaland on the deteriorating law and order situation in the State.
“…the recent letter of RN Ravi, Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland and GOI appointed Interlocutor to the Indo-Naga Peace Process to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland which portrays the torchbearers of the Naga movement in bad light reveals the arrogant attitude and insincere approach of the GOI and their unwillingness to settle the issue. It also reeks of an attempt by the Appointed symbolic head of the state to overthrow and overpower a democratically elected government,” said the NSF in a press release issued by its media cell.
In his letter to the CM, the Governor had said that law and order has collapsed in Nagaland. “The constitutional established State Government is being challenged on day to day basis by the armed gang who question the sovereignty and integrity of the nation while the instruments of law and order remain totally unresponsive. In such a backdrop I can no longer abstain from my constitutional obligations for law and order in the State under Article 371A (1) (b) of the Constitution of India,” he stated in the letter.
The Governor also proposed that hereafter important law and order decisions like transfer and positing of officials entrusted with maintenance of law and order responsibilities of and above the district level will be after the approval of the Governor.
“I also propose to periodically review the law and order in the State and issue required lawful directions. In order to instill and ensure accountability I also prefer to review the annual performance appraisal reports of all such officers,” the Governor had said.
The NSF also took exception that the Governor has portrayed the torchbearers of the Naga movement in bad light in the letter to CM. It said the federation will not “remain blind and mute to attempts by individuals to belittle and disregard our internationally recognized movement.”
“As the group who will inherit the solution, the federation denounce and condemns the disrespectful attitude of RN Ravi towards our Naga freedom fighters. The usage of the terminologies like ‘Gangsters’, ‘extortionists’ etc. by the GOI appointed Interlocutor only seeks to undo whatever has been achieved through the blood, sweat and tears of his predecessors,”it said.
Stating that it has lost all hopes in an honourable and acceptable solution to the vexed Naga issue for as long as someone with “such minimal understanding of the issue and disrespectful attitude is at helm from the Indian side”, the federation alleged that RN Ravi himself has been responsible for the many hiccups in the peace-process “in his attempts to earn some personal brownie points”.
The NSF demanded RN Ravi to come out in the open and tell the Naga public as to whom he is referring to as ‘gangsters’ and ‘extortionists’ in his letter to the Chief Minister. “If it as such than, it is a matter of shame that, the mighty India has appointed retired top-cop to sit down on the same negotiating table with Gangsters and Extortionists,” it stated.
The federation further reminded RN Ravi that the GoI has officially recognized the Naga issue as a political issue and “his every single attempt” to downgrade it to a State law and order problem will prove futile. “It is time that he takes his role as an Interlocutor seriously or call it quit altogether for even with or without him, the aspiration of the Naga people shall continue to thrive,” it added.
