NPF suspends 7 rebel MLAs from party

Dimapur, April 16: The Naga People’s Front (NPF) has suspended seven rebel MLAs from both primary and active membership of the party with immediate effect until further orders.
The 7 MLAs are N. Thongwang Konyak, MLA of 46 Mon Town AC; Eshak Konyak, MLA, 47 Aboi AC; E.E. Pangteang, MLA, 48 Moka AC; B.S. Nganglang, MLA, 49 Tamlu AC; Toyang Chang, MLA, 53 Tuensang Sadar I AC; Kejong Chang, MLA, 54 Tuensang Sadar II AC and C. L. John, MLA, 45 Tehok AC.
In the suspension order of the 7 MLAs, NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, however, said the 7 MLAs will be bound by the Whip of the NPF on the floor of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly as per the existing law and judicial decisions of the apex Court.
The Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) of the NPF had earlier served sow cause notice dated 01.04.2019 to 6 MLAs and on 01.04.2019 to CL John (MLA) as to why action should not be taken against them for taking side with the political opponent of the NPF in the Lok Sabha Election 2019.
The 7 MLAs in their reply to the show cause notice reiterated their stand to take side with the political opponent of the NPF in the Lok Sabha Election 2019. “This attitude on your part is nothing short of willfully defying the collective decision of the party to support a particular political party/candidate for the lone Nagaland Parliamentary Constituency in the 17th Parliamentary (Lok Sabha) Election, which is sufficient to infer that your decisions and movements are all anti-party activities,” said the suspension order.
Shürhozelie said the 7 MLAs in their reply had demanded withdrawal of the show cause notice served to them rather than expressing remorse for not being able to adhere to the party’s collective decision and directive. “Such attitude on your part factually demonstrates that you have some hidden agenda to further disintegrate the party which cannot be overlooked.”
The order also pointed out that the party had convened consultative meeting comprising of all NPF MLAs/all COBs/all CEC members/all central frontals & cell office bearers/all divisional presidents, working presidents & general secretary on 30.03.2019 at NPF Central Office, but the 7 MLAs “intentionally refused to attend the consultative meeting which is nothing short of forfeiting your right to talk of inner party democracy and voluntarily giving up your membership from the NPF.”
“Inspite of serving show cause notice to you by the party, you have been willfully ignoring and avoiding the NPF Legislature meetings since 25.03.2019 without valid reasons which is another proof of voluntarily giving up your membership from the NPF as you have been stopping yourself from participating in any meetings of the NPF ever since you openly associated yourself with the political opponent of the NPF.”
The order said even after serving show cause notice to them, the 7 MLAs continuously associated with the PDA Government and the NDPP candidate for the lone Nagaland Parliamentary Constituency “which is a clear proof beyond reasonable doubt that your conduct amounts to voluntarily giving up the Membership of the NPF which cannot be condoned.”
It also stated that the NPF Central Office has received post election report that the 7 MLAs had wholeheartedly supported and voted in favour of the NDPP candidate in the Lok Sabha Election 2019, which, the NPF said, is an act of total defiance of the party’s decision.
