NPF ridicules NDPP for not having manifesto for polls

Kohima, April 9: The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) which is contesting the Lok Sabha and Aonglenden Assembly by-election without manifesto has come under severe attack from the opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF).
Addressing a press conference at party central office today, party spokesman, Achumbemo Kikon said NDPP is at the mercy of Hindu rightwing party BJP and has been forced to contest on saffron manifesto. Lauding the manifesto of the Congress; the party which the cock has decided to support, he said a party without manifesto contesting the election is ridiculous and bereft of policies for the people.
He further expressed surprise how the NDPP strategists have decided to contest on BJP’s manifesto which is full of anti-minority and northeast and contrast to Congress’ manifesto which has promised to restore special status to northeastern states, strengthen North East Council (NEC), against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), review of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, etc.
Brushing away statements of NDPP, he said the party had taken decision not to contest and support the Congress candidate, K L Chishi for the Lok Sabha seat in the interest of Naga people and most importantly to give tempo to the Naga peace process. He asked people to understand the sacrifices being made by the cock party in the past and now only for the Naga people’s interest and to safeguard the Nagas’ identity. “NPF represent Naga people to the fullest,” he claimed. He said NPF had overcome all time tested situation and promised not to move away from the challenging and trying times for the sake of Naga people.
He said coming together of NPF and Congress is to fight against communal forces which are trying to annihilate minorities. But he said the top priority of the NPF party is to resolve the Naga political issue and for this the party had taken decision to support the Congress and the leadership of Rahul Gandhi who is committed to resolve the issue if voted to power. “NPF has not taken wrong decision to support the Congress,” he asserted.
He went on to add that BJP’s agenda is to let Hindu dominate the country while Congress’ ideology is to protect secular fabric of the nation. “We have sacrificed our candidate in the interest of Naga people,” Kikon repeated.
Clarifying on NPF’s stand in Manipur, which is part of the BJP led Government, Kikon said the party is contesting the outer Manipur Parliamentary seat which means the party has different principles and ideology.
Appealing the Naga voters to vote for Congress, the cock’s spokesman said Naga people are not safe in the hands of NDPP, adding Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is nervous of the coming together of NPF and Congress.
In last by-election to Lok Sabha, the Congress supported the NPF unconditionally.
Stating that NPF’s decision not to filed candidate despite having 26 MLAs has created a good history, he said the party is determined to resolve the Naga issue and that there would be no regret even if the popularity of the cock party declines. He said as long as the party is working in the interest of Naga people there will be no regrets. He was also rebutting to NDPP’s repeated belittling of NPF for not fielding the candidate for the Lok Sabha and deciding to support the Congress which has no MLA in the assembly.
“NPF will not deviate from its principles and objectives to safeguard the people,” he added.
Kikon also appealed to NPF supporters to vote for K L Chishi as he was also once Chief Minister from Nagaland People’s Council (NPC). (Page News Service)
