‘Assembly Secretariat must be declared ‘containment zone’
Dimapur, July 29: Following rejection of the request by Opposition leader to defer the date of Assembly sitting on July 30 by the Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, the NPF Legislature Party has decided that all MLAs from the opposition party will abstain from attending the 6th Session of the 13th NLA scheduled on July 30.
Taking this decision in a meeting of the NPF Legislature Party on Wednesday at the residence of opposition leader TR Zeliang, the meeting observed that the initiative of the Speaker in getting all the MLAs and their supporting staffs including the staffs of the Assembly Secretariat tested for COVID-19 was praiseworthy. However, it said the last-minute testing should have been avoided and tests should have been completed a week back.
“Now that MLAs and Staffs of the Assembly Secretariat among others have tested positive for the COVID-19, it is not safe for the Assembly Secretariat to continue normal functioning.
“For general safety, Hon’ble Leader of Opposition, Sh. TR Zeliang had today written to Hon’ble Speaker to defer the date of Assembly sitting scheduled for July 30, 2020. However, request of the Hon’ble Leader of Opposition has gone unattended and as such, MLAs from the Opposition Party will abstain from attending the 6th Session of the 13th NLA scheduled to be held on July 30, 2020,” said minutes of the NPF Legislature Party meeting.
The NPF said fresh detection of COVID-19 positive cases from among the staffs of the Assembly Secretariat including MLAs and their supporting staffs calls for immediate attention of the State Government. “The place must be declared a containment zone and the same must be sealed immediately. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the State Government in regard to COVID-19 must be uniform for all places in the State. In this regard, the same yardstick applicable to other areas which have been declared as Containment Zones must be applied to the Assembly Secretariat as well,” it insisted. (Page News Service)
