NPF expected to be inducted into UDA

Nagaland News

KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 19: Finally the Naga People’s Front (NPF) is also expected to be inducted into the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Government at the cost of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).

The BJP has told Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to maintain a status quo while admitting 25 NPF legislators into the Government. Rio would have to accommodate the NPF in his Ministry at the cost of his party. But it remains to be seen how long this political honeymoon would last, as Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio would not be in a position to accommodate all 25 Cock MLAs into the Ministry. At the moment, one Cabinet berth, one Advisor and a post of Deputy Speaker is vacant but how will Rio accommodate all NPF legislators? The Chief Minister may like to share seats with NPF, chipping into the shares of his Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), and form a jumbo-sized Ministry, but still all may not be well both in the NPF and NDPP.
Opposition-less Government is also expected to be an extra burden on the State’s Exchequer.
Rio has reportedly told the NPF leaders that he will share with the latter whatever is available, although the NPF has not placed any condition before the Chief Minister. “Our party has not put any condition. We do not know whether or when the CM will induct or allot any Cabinet or non-Cabinet portfolio to NPF Legislators, even though he says he will share with the NPF whatever is available”, a senior NPF lawmaker said.
He said since they have changed the nomenclature from People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) to UDA it is now the prerogative of Chief Minister to make a new arrangement.
While the opposition-less Government has taken off it would be interesting to see how former Chief Minister TR Zeliang would shepherd his 25 MLAs, as election is just one-and-half years away. Rio, admitting the NPF into their fold, despite opposition from its ally BJP, murmuring within the NDPP, is not groundless and has some purpose. And unquestionably the Chief Minister would try to strengthen his party before going to the poll to seek the next mandate.

Another reason which is obvious why Rio favoured the opposition-less Government could be to avoid further smearing of his Government with corruption and poor governance, charges, before the next election.
