Dimapur, April 30: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has demanded immediate roll back of COVID-19 cess on petrol and diesel as notified by the Government of Nagaland on April 28.
The Government of Nagaland has on April 28 notified COVID-19 cess on diesel and petrol at the rate of Rs 5 and Rs 6 respectively.
In a statement, NPCC president K Therie said the imposition of COVID-19 cess on petroleum products is unacceptable in the present circumstances as it will result in price rise across commodities.
“In the present situation where the people have lost business and jobs, development activities halted, industries closed and farming activities affected for those living in urban areas, imposing of extra tax is nothing but adding salt to injury,” he stated.
According to the Congress party, the State Government has passed a Rs 21,049 crore budget and this money is available with the Government. “In addition, the State Government has received State Disaster Response Management Funds and perhaps Prime Minister CARES fund too. We have also seen NEC has released grants while the Centre is supplying PPE materials.”
The NPCC maintained that instead of raising cess to increase prices, the Government should concentrate on restructuring the State’s economy to stimulate economic growth and check price rise.
“Congress therefore demands immediate rollback of the said notification,” it stated.
