Dimapur, October 7: Noted Gandhian, Padma Shri Natwar Thakkar passed away early Sunday morning at around 7 am at Apollo Hospital, Guwahati. He was 86 and is survived by his wife Padma Shri Lentila Ao, two daughters and a son.
Late Thakkar was born in 1932 in the coastal Dahanu town and came to Nagaland in 1955 at the age of 23. He was the founder of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram at Chuchuyimlang village under Mokokchung.
Late Natwar Thakkar was instrumental in imparting various vocational training to the local youths. Due to his efforts, an extension centre of National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology was started at Chuchuyimlang village in 2006.
Late Thakkar was awarded Padma Shree in the year 1999 for his tireless service by the Government of India. He was also awarded Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration in the year 1994 for his endeavour towards emotional integration through voluntary social service.
Governor, CM condoles
Nagaland Governor PB Acharya has expressed grief at the demise of Padma Shri Natwar Thakkar (86).
“Late Natwar Thakkar was a personal friend of mine and had a long period of association with him. I had visited his Ashram in the year 1965 during my maiden visit to North East after the disastrous Chinese aggression in 1962. His demise is a personal loss to me,” he said.
Late Natwar Thakkar worked hard to spread Gandhian philosophy in Nagaland. He established the Nagaland Gandhi Ashram in the Chuchuyimlang village in 1955 when Nagaland was in turmoil. He was the frontrunner in fostering “goodwill and emotional integration through voluntary social service” among the people of Nagaland, using Gandhian principles, he said.
“In his demise, Nagaland in particular and country in general has lost a humanitarian social worker, a Gandhian and above all a patriot,” the Governor said.
Acharya conveyed heartfelt condolence to members of the bereaved family and prayed to Almighty God to grant strength and solace to bear the irreparable loss.
CM: Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has expressed grief at the passing away of Natwar Thakkar on Sunday.
“In his demise, Nagas in particular have lost a friend and guide who left the comforts of his home in Maharashtra to come to Nagaland and work for the people,” he said.
The Chief Minister expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
LoO: Leader of Opposition TR Zeliang has expressed grief at the demise of Natwar Thakkar, popularly known as Natwar Bhai.
“A true follower of the Gandhian principles, he exemplified these principles through his selfless deeds throughout his life,” he said.
Zeliang extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
BJP: The State Bharatiya Janata Party Nagaland has expressed grief at the sudden demise of Gandhi Ashram founder Natwar Thakkar, father of Dr Aotoshi, who passed away this morning at Guwahati at 7 am.
