NLA Speaker Vikho-o passes away; State funeral on Jan 1

Dimapur/Kohima, December 30: Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Er. Vikho-o Yhoshu passed away after a sudden cardiac arrest at a hospital in Mumbai on Monday. He was 68 and is survived by his wife, 10 children (4 sons & 6 daughters) and grand children.
Late Vikho-o Yhoshu was undergoing treatment for lung cancer since early this year, family sources said. His body will be flown from Mumbai to Nagaland on Tuesday, his family said.
Additional Secretary (Home) Nusieta Rhakho informed that the State will observe three days State mourning from December 30 to January 1, 2020 as a mark of respect to Late Vikho-o Yhoshu.
Chief Secretary, Temjen Toy said during the period of State mourning, the national flag will be flown at half mast throughout the State where it is regularly flown, and there will be no official entertainment during the period.
The State funeral will be accorded to late Vikho-o Yhoshu on January 1, 2020, at 11 am at the official residence of the Speaker.
Born on October 1, 1951 at Kigwema village, late Vikho-o Yhoshu did his early schooling from Government High School, Kohima and passed matriculation in 1968. He did his pre- University from Cotton College, Guwahati in 1969; B.Tech (First Class with Honours) from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad in 1974; and also did Certificate in Industrial Engineering and Management (CISM) from the School of Mines in 1976. He was awarded with Mine Manager’s First Class Certificate of Competency (FCC) in All India Competitive Examination in 1976.
Late Vikho-o Yhoshu joined Government service and served as Assistant Manager in Coal India Ltd (Government of India undertaking) from 1975 to 1980; Officer on Special Duty (Geology and Mining) equivalent to joint secretary in Nagaland Civil Secretariat from May 1980 to March 1996, OSD (G&M) equivalent to additional secretary & ex-officio MD, NSMDC from April 1996 to August 2002; OSD (G&M) equivalent to secretary and ex-officio Managing Director, NSMDC in Nagaland Civil Secretariat from September 2002 to August 2007.
He entered politics in the year 2008 and contested in the general elections on NPF ticket and successfully returned from 14 Southern Angami-1 constituency as member to the 11th Nagaland Legislative Assembly. He was appointed as Advisor IT&TE; Chairman DAN from March 2008- May 2009; Advisor IT&C from June 2009-February 2013. He was again elected to the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly from the same assembly constituency on NPF ticket and appointed as Parliamentary Secretary, Housing, Treasuries & Accounts from February 2013-April 2014; Parliamentary Secretary, Veterinary & AH, T&A, LMCP from May 2014 to Dec 2014, Parliamentary Secretary, Mechanical & Chairman NSMDC from February 2017-Dec 2017, and Advisor Mechanical & Chairman NSMDC from Dec 2017 to Jan 2018. He got elected for the third time from the same constituency on NDPP ticket and elected the Speaker of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
Guv, CM & others condoles
Governor of Nagaland and Meghalaya, RN Ravi has expressed shock at the untimely demise of Vikho-o Yhoshu, Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly due to illness.
In a condolence message, the Governor said in the demise of Vikho-o, the people of Nagaland have lost a tall and a prominent leader.
The Governor conveyed deepest condolences to the bereaved family members, and prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
CM: Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has also expressed shock and grief at the untimely demise of Speaker, NLA, Vikho-o Yhoshu, who passed away after a sudden cardiac arrest at Mumbai today.
“Late Shri Vikho-o was a brilliant, kind-hearted and highly capable leader,” he said.
On a personal level, Rio said their association grew stronger over the years “as we worked together for the people.”
“I found him to be always concerned for the Nagas and the indomitable Naga-ness in him was the main driving force behind his service to the people… His zeal and enthusiasm in rendering his selfless services towards the resolution of the decades old Naga Political Issue can never be forgotten and the vacuum created by his demise will be difficult to fill.”
The CM, on behalf of the Government of Nagaland as Leader of the House and on his own behalf, expressed deepest condolences to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
NLA: Nagaland Legislative Assembly also expressed pain and grief at the demise of Speaker, NLA, Vikho-o Yhoshu, saying in his demise the State has lost a tall and a charismatic political leader, which is difficult to fill in.
“Late Shri. Vikho-o Yhoshu was a fine gentlemen and a good leader. He was loved by one and all. He was very learned, diplomatic and a great statesman. He had convened both the Assembly Sessions and the Joint Legislators Forum on Naga political issue smoothly and successfully. In his demise the State has lost a tall and a charismatic political leader, which is difficult to fill in,” said Sharingain Longkumer, Deputy Speaker, NLA.
The Deputy Speaker, on behalf of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, conveyed heartfelt condolences and prayed that the Good Lord grant solace to the bereaved family members.
NDPP: The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has expressed shock and grief at the demise of Er. Vikho-o Yhoshu, Speaker, NLA, today, saying in his demise, the people of Nagaland, the constituents of 14th Southern Angami-1 A/C and the NDPP have lost a dedicated leader, friend and a father figure.
“In his passing, a void has been created which will not be easily filled,” said NDPP president, Chingwang Konyak in a condolence message.
The NDPP conveyed deepest condolence to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed leader’s soul to rest in eternal peace.
NPF: The Naga People’s Front has expressed grief at the demise of Er. Vikho-o Yhoshu, Speaker, Nagaland Legislative Assembly at Mumbai today after a prolonged illness, saying the vacuum created by his demise will be difficult to fill.
“Late Er. Vikho-o can be best known for his simplicity and honesty who had great concern for the upliftment of his people and the Naga people. In his demise, the Naga people have lost a great politician and a leader whose contributions shall ever be etched prominently in our minds,” said NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu in a condolence message.
The NPF conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
NPCC: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has also expressed pain and grief at the demise of Er. Vikho-o Yhoshü, Speaker, NLA.
“Being one of the first mining engineers amongst the Nagas, he was instrumental in shaping the future of the Geology and Mining Department. As a public leader, he was a sociable yet sincerely responsible leader who always considered the interests of the people as the utmost priority,” said a condolence message from NPCC president K Therie.
“In his demise, the irreparable loss is not only to the family members but also the people of Nagaland have lost a truly tall leader and the vacuum created by his passing away cannot be filled,” he said.
The NPCC conveyed deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
MP LS: MP Lok Sabha, Tokheho Yepthomi has also expressed grief at the demise of Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Er. Vikho-o Yhoshu. “He was a humble and dedicated person who strived to make our state a better place. His work and dedication for his people enabled him to win the trust of his constituency electorates, who elected him for the third consecutive time as Member of Legislative Assembly. In his demise we have lost a humble person and a dedicated leader. His absence will be felt for times to come,” he said in a condolence message.
The MP conveyed deepest condolences to his family members and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
Neiba Kronu: Planning & Co-ordination Minister Neiba Kronu has expressed grief at the sudden demise of Vikho-o Yhoshu, Speaker, NLA.
“He was a wise person and was the first Mining Engineer among Nagas. He was a loyal and sincere leader and was always ready to serve others,” he said in a condolence.
“We have lost a humble soul,” he said and conveyed deepest condolence to the bereaved family and prayed for the his gentle soul to rest in peace.
19th Phek A/C: MLA Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu has also conveyed deepest condolences to the bereaved family members of NLA Speaker, Er. Vikho-o Yhoshu, who passed away today.
“We have lost another humble soul in the person of Lt. Er Vikho-o Yhoshu Hon’ble Speaker of NLA. We have lost a great leader,” Azo said in a condolence message and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
Kripa Foundation: Kripa Foundation Nagaland has expressed grief at the demise of NLA Speaker.
“He was a remarkable gentleman with humility, a soft-spoken, courageous, open mind and ever willing to help marginalise group of people by sharing his past experiences, pleasant natured and God fearing person. Kripa Foundation and Late Er. Vikho-o Yhoshii have associated for the last three decades in recovery program,” said the foundation in a condolence.
The Kripa Foundation extended deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
