NLA ratifies 126th Constitution Amendment Bill 2019

Kohima, January 17: Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on Friday ratified the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Sixth Amendment) Bill, 2019. The Bill was unanimously adopted by the House.
Prior to the adoption of the resolution, chief minister Neiphiu Rio explained that the Amendment was made in regard to Article 334 which pertains to period of reservation of seats for SCs and STs and representation of the Anglo-Indian community by nomination in the House of the People (Lok Sabha) and the Legislative Assemblies of state.
The Bill seeks to extend the reservation for SCs and STs by another 10 years till January 25, 2030.
“Nagaland is a direct beneficiary of this provision and that 59 out of the 60 seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes of Nagaland,” said Rio in support of the Bill.
Rio also called for discussion on Nagaland Lok Sabha seat which is unreserved. He said the lone Lok Sabha seat is unreserved and that Members of the House need to discuss and deliberate on the issue.
Thought Nagaland is protected by Inner Line Permit and special provision under Article 371A, the lone Lok Sabha Seat remains unreserved. Dimapur-1 Assembly Constituency is also unreserved.
The assembly is likely to discuss the issue as proposed by the Chief Minister. (Page News Service)
