GUWAHATI, JANUARY 5: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will approach Gauhati High Court, seeking peasant leader Akhil Gogoi’s custody again.
A source said the NIA might ask a Division Bench for Akhil’s custody on Monday.
He added that there were possibilities of the hearing related to the custody being heard on Monday or after Akhil’s judicial custody is over. The source said although there was no confirmation on how many days the agency had sought Akhil’s custody, everything would be cleared on Monday. The agency may ask for 10 or 14 days’ custody for further investigation into the charges against him.
Akhil was first arrested by Assam police on December 12. On December 17, he was handed over to the NIA which arrested him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He was in 10-day NIA custody and after the end of the remand he was produced in a special NIA court on December 26, which sent him to 14 days’ judicial custody.
A police officer said an NIA team carried out search operations at Akhil’s house at Nizarapar on December 26 and seized documents and a laptop. Another team raided Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) office at Gandhibasti and seized books and files.
During the 3-hour raid on Akhil’s house, the sleuths seized copies of his identity cards, registration certificate of Orchid Park in Kaziranga (of which he is the founder), a bank passbook, a file with the name tag “Credit-deposit ratio KMSS file Misc”, a diary which he had written in jail in 2017, a debit card, a file related to NHPC Lower Subansiri hydroelectric project and a laptop. All these were seized from the library in his house.
