Attempt to strengthen shaky Govt: NPF, Cong
Kohima, May 1: The nervy two months old People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) Government headed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio continues to make more political appointments to ensure that the alliance remains intact.
In the latest move, Rio has appointed over a dozen political leaders in the status of Cabinet and State Minister, which is perhaps unprecedented in the history of Nagaland State. The move is seen as an attempt to keep leaders of the political parties in alliance in good humour and not do anything that might endanger the PDA Government.
The appointment, however, has negated the new Government’s policy of doing away with VIP culture.
On Tuesday the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and BJP led PDA Government appointed bigwigs of political parties of the alliance in the status of Cabinet and State Ministers, putting extra burden on the State’s exchequer.
Rio has already appointed over a dozens of people at Chief Minister’s Office and the Deputy CM’s office.
There are also reports of political appointments by Ministers and Advisors.
NDPP and BJP took a lion’s share again by appointing their party managers in the status of Cabinet.
President of NDPP, Chingwang Konyak and Secretary General Abu Metha and BJP President, Vsasolie Lhoungu were appointed in the status of Cabinet Minister. The notification was issued by Cabinet Secretary, Temjen Toy. The trio have been appointed as Chairman, Co-Chairman and Member Secretary of PDA.
Another ten party functionaries of NDPP, BJP, NPP and JD (U) have been appointed as members of PDA in the status of Minister of State. They are Neiba Ndang (NDPP), H. Chuba Chang (NDPP), Charlie Sekhose (NDPP), James Vizo (BJP), Eduzu Theluo (BJP), Yanbose Murry (BJP), Ato Yephtomi, President NPP, Sasank Ghatraj, General Secretary NPP, G. Viccashe Sumi, Executive Member NPP and Y M humtsoe JD(U).
But the opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF) and the Congress have ridiculed the political appointments saying that exercise is merely to strengthen the shaky Government and that the tall promises of NDPP and BJP during the February election are going to be far from reality.
The two parties said PDA Government’s promise to do away with VIP culture and austerity measure is only a lip service.
“This clearly shows the double standard of PDA Government,” the NPF said. The party source said on the one hand the State Government declared that it would do away with VIP culture, while on the other hand it is appointing almost just about anybody belonging to the NDPP and the BJP in top positions.
The State Congress said real change has come as promised by the NDPP and BJP alliance, adding doing away with VIP culture was just a slogan to fool the people.
Party source said PDA Government might start appointing District level party office bearers in the status of MLAs. (Page News Service)
