NERPC best suited for deliberation & fruitful resolution of inter-regional power issues: Rio


DIMAPUR, MARCH 28: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today said that the forum of North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) is best suited for deliberation and fruitful resolution of inter-regional power sector issues.
Chairing the meeting of the NERPC, Ministry of Power, Government of India, at Guwahati on Monday, Rio urged the member States of the Northeastern Region to utilize the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) of Government of India to strengthen the distribution network and capacity building of DISCOMS and Power Departments.
The matters such as North East Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP) of Government of India, expansion of transmission networks, expansion of reliable communication, development of hydro plants, etc. were discussed in the meeting.
Stating that Northeast Region is blessed with huge hydro potential, which needs to be harnessed, B Lyngkhoi, convener and Member Secretary of NERPC meeting apprised the forum that high scale up-gradation in the transmission networks is necessary for evacuation of hydro power of the region.
The meeting was attended by the Power Ministers of Northeast States along with the higher managements of various Central and State power utilities. The chairmanship of the meeting rotates among the States of NER. This time, it was held under the chairmanship and guidance of Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister, Nagaland.
The technical issues were initially taken up in the Technical Coordination Committee (TCC) meeting of NER on March 26 last under the Chairmanship of Sh. Penrithung Yanthan, Chief Engineer (T&G), Department of Power, Nagaland.
The recommendations of TCC have been referred to NERPC forum for the final ratification/approval.
Along with the discussions on various issues, the upcoming CERC/CEA regulations were highlighted to the members of the forum.
