PFUTSERO, JULY 5: With a view to mitigate effects of climate change and also as a way forward towards overcoming the impact of COVID-19, Nagaland Minister Neiba Kronu today distributed 22,000 fruit tree saplings worth Rs 10 lakh to 12 villages of Pfutsero Assembly Constituency, under Phek district.

The fruit tree saplings include: Avocado, Persimmon, Chestnut, Tamarillo, Yongchak, local herbal tree (lengotshe), etc.
Minister for Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Kronu speaking on the occasion said protection of our planet and environment is of immense importance considering the impact of climate change.
He said the project is being initiated through the Local Area Development Programme (LADP) with a view to fight the challenges of climate change as well as help uplift the economy.
Along with environmental protection, sustenance of livelihood is also equally important, he said.
The Himalayan range, including Nagaland, is rich in biodiversity and having the youngest soil has the potential of growing different species, he said.
Recalling that while being the Parliamentary Secretary for Horticulture Department in 2014 for about a year, Kronu said he toured around the world and also South India to learn about what Nagaland can give to other parts of the country and world as the most important is to have a market avenue.
The Minister expressed happiness that the Entrepreneur Associate has come forward to take care of market avenues for the produce of farmers.
In this, he said fruits of low volume with high value yield and not easily perishable items should be the prime target.
Citing crops like local ginger and tree tomato (tamarillo), he said the bigger the quantity the better the market value will be.
Avowing to continue the project even in the years to come, Kronu challenged the people to work towards making Pfutsero the “Land of fruits and plentiful”.
“Our Constituency (16 Pfutsero) should be an example for other districts to take up mass fruit tree plantation for overall economic uplift”, the Minister challenged.
Giving an introduction on the trees for wealth project, Chief Executive Officer Entrepreneurs Associate, Neichute Doulo said the project was launched in 2019 by Minister Kronu.
The project is historic not only for Pfutsero but it should also be emulated by other Legislators which would hugely benefit the entire state.

This is a huge movement not only for livelihood missions but also for environmental protection, he said.
He also assured that EA will buy back all the produce of the farmers, who have received the 22,000 saplings today.
He also encouraged farmers to form clusters and groups to find markets for their produce and not to be always dependent on the Government.
EA Zonal Head Cukhoyi Chiero chaired the programme while former Chairman of Pfutsero Town Council Dingulo Khutso extended words of appreciation.
