JALUKBARI, JUNE 14: Airports Authority of India (AAI), Regional HQ Guwahati in association with AAI Engineers’ Guild, organised a seminar for the engineers working at various airports and projects in the Northeastern region, on Wednesday, according to a press statement issued today.
The seminar was inaugurated by Sanjeev Jindal, Regional Executive Director (RED), AAI North East Region, Guwahati in the presence of JT Radhakrishna, General Manager (Project), Ramesh Kumar, APD, Guwahati Airport, GMs of other related Departments and representatives from stakeholders.
The daylong seminar focused on various topics concerning infrastructural development, quality product manufacturing, latest building procedure, etc.
Addressing the participants, Jindal said the NE region is one of the best regions to work in as people’s happiness is a key factor here.
Considering the present growth of air traffic in the region, especially Guwahati (above 27% year over year), there is an immediate need for expansion, up-gradation and modernisation of existing terminal buildings with minor and major aviation projects, he said.
The LGBI Airport has witnessed an annual traffic growth of over 27% in FY 2018-19 with a total footfall of 60,18,054 passengers and 55,066 aircraft movements in the same period, he said.
Jindal said building an airport is a challenging task and to decorate its structure as per the local aesthetics is another mission that engineers with designers undertake. This includes finishing roof – ceiling design, floor-indoor-outdoor décor, glass hardware, waterproofing, glazing exterior area, mounting additional safety and signage structure, terrazzo flooring, expansion of joint covers and many more.
Role of local community in airports was also elaborated where Jindal said that an Aviation Skill Development Centre would soon be opened to provide employment to local people under the corporate social responsibility (CSR) scheme of AAI. It would be a mutual benefit model where airlines, security agencies, construction companies, master concessionaires and other stakeholders would employ local youths in several tasks, he added.
New integrated terminal buildings (NITB) are coming up at Guwahati, Agartala and Imphal airports and a new greenfield airport is coming up at Hollangi (near Itanagar). At Guwahati, construction is going on full swing.
Similarly, at the Agartala airport, the NITB is nearing completion and would be opened for passengers in a few months. At Imphal and Hollangi, construction works have already started, Jindal informed.
The seminar concluded with the panellists seeking cooperation from the agencies, stakeholders, experts and representatives from different organisations in developing and modernising the aviation infrastructure in the Northeast. (Courtesy: AT)
