National Deworming Day launched at Kohima

Kohima, February 10: National Deworming Day 2020 was launched today at Kohima at Baptist Higher Secondary School by Dr Atoshe. The programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Addressing at the launching programme, Dr Atoshe said that National De-worming Day (NDD) is targeted to all children between 1-19 years of age to receive treatment for parasitic intestinal worms STH (Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis) through the platform of schools and anganwadi centers. He stated that the Government of India aims to cover at least 9000 of all children through the National Deworming Day programme. 65% of children in India between 1-14 years are at risk of worm infestation.
Atoshe stated that the goal and objective of National De-worming Day is to de-worm all pre-school and school-age children (enrolled and non-enrolled) between the ages of 1-19 years through the platform of Government aided schools, private schools and anganwadi centers in order to improve their overall health, nutritional status, access to education and quality of life. He further stated that the target beneficiaries’ age group includes from all government and private schools and anganwadi centers in the State with the target of 637,994 and the target to eliminate morbidity due to worm infection in children by 2020.
He stated that the first National De-worming Day, was implemented in 11 states on February 2015, which has successfully de-wormed 89.8 million children in the age group of 1-19 years.
Dr Atoshe also stated, the programme will be carried out in coordination amongst three departments in convergence of Health & Family Welfare, School Education and Women and Child Development.
In addition mass de-worming mop up day will be held on February 17 for those children missed out on the de-worming day through all schools and anganwadi centers.
