NASSA begins 1st phase agitation against extension of Dr Antony’s service

Nagaland News

KOHIMA, JUNE 3: The Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA) today launched its first phase of 2-day agitation by way of ‘pen-down strike’ protesting the extension of service of Dr PJ Antony in the State Assembly.
Interacting with a section of media, NASSA vice president Rocus Rino said that they launched the agitation because the Association is against the wrong system of arbitrarily amending the Assembly service rules that a contractual or a superannuated person can be appointed till the age of 65 years.
“We are against it and also that a retired person cannot be the Head of Administration”, he said while pointing that after unilaterally amending the Service Rules, Dr PJ Antony, who had been serving on contractual appointment for two years since May 31, 2020 and was supposed to complete his term by May 31, 2022 has been given service extension with promotion to Principal Secretary of the State Assembly.
Asked if there has been any official communication from the Assembly Speaker or the State Government, Rino said since Dr Antony has been already given the extension and re-appointed as Principal Secretary Thursday evening, he attended the office but the NASSA didn’t cooperate with him.
Even the dak (file) containing his appointment as Principal Secretary was not moved today, he said.
Nonetheless, Rino said the pen down strike went on peacefully but there has not been any official communication either from the NLA Speaker or the State Government.
The NASSA vice president also informed that the pen-down strike would continue on Saturday while decision on further course of action would be taken after the first phase of agitation.
Asked as to why NASSA launched the agitation despite filing a Court case for which the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench has set two weeks time till June 9 for the NLA Secretariat to file the affidavit, Rino said despite the Court’s order that there should not be any extension of service or appointment, the NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer issued Dr Antony’s appointment as Principal Secretary only late evening, therefore NASSA decided to launch the agitation in all seriousness.
