Dimapur, August 6: The Namtola Bridge connecting Mon from Assam collapsed Tuesday morning. An alternate route connecting Mon with Assam is being used till the bridge is repaired.
According to reports the wooden bridge collapsed in the middle Tuesday morning when a Dumper truck was crossing it. One person sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Thavaseelan IAS told Nagaland Page that the wooden bridge was in a dilapidated condition and restrictions were placed earlier for heavy vehicles not to ply over the bridge.
Thavaseelan said, “It is not an RCC bridge but a wooden bridge at Namtola. It is undergoing decaying of the wooden structure since a very long time and this morning when the truck was passing, it finally gave in. It was not that the truck was overloaded it was an empty truck. It collapsed in the middle and the truck fell into the river below. The driver was rescued and admitted in the hospital with minor injuries and there was no casualty”.
When queried on the reports that Mon has been cut off from Assam, he said it has not be cut off. “We have an alternate road and have opened it for traffic and vehicles are passing through that stretch. There is no worry about any scarcity or anything of these sorts. The National Highway department is looking after the bridge and already some restoration works had been started,” he said.
On reports that one person died in the incident, the DC said no casualty took place and the driver is safe and was discharged from the hospital after first aid.
