Nagaland welcomes Governor Ravi with hopes of early Naga solution

Kohima, August 1: With the swearing of Centre’s interlocutor for Naga peace talks, R N Ravi as the new Governor of Nagaland, Naga people have high hopes for an early solution to vexed Indo-Naga political problem, as well as deliverance of good governance that is starkly missing today.
Besides being the Governor of Nagaland, RN Ravi will continue to be the interlocutor for the peace talks with the NSCN-IM and other Naga groups.
A home ministry official had earlier said that besides holding the post of Governor of Nagaland, RN Ravi will continue to be the Government’s interlocutor for the ongoing talks with various Naga insurgent groups for a final settlement.
“We look forward to you becoming the driving force of not just the Naga peace process but we look forward to your leadership in all aspects of delivering good governance to our State whereby each citizen is able to contribute towards the nation building process,” said Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during a welcome dinner held in honour of the newly sworn in Governor, his wife Laxmi Ravi and host of his family members at the State Banquet Hall here Thursday night.
Ravi has been closely associated with Nagaland and the Naga people for many years, Rio said adding that as Interlocutor of the lndo-Naga peace process he has been at the core of the peace talks and the political negotiations and was the driving force behind the 3rd August Framework Agreement which was signed in the presence of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi in the year 2015.
“We are indeed fortunate to have him as our new Governor,” the CM said, adding “Our new Governor is well aware of the circumstances and the ground situation”.
In this Rio reiterated that the Indo-Naga peace process is at the top of the PDA Government’s agenda and it has declared to play the role of active facilitator in the peace talks.
“We have made all possible efforts to ensure that a congenial environment is created for realisation of an early political solution. Our efforts towards our political agenda continue till date”, he said.
The people across all Naga areas are crying out for peace and resolution of the several decades old lndo-Naga political conflict, as generations have been impacted by the political movement and all sections and conflicting parties have come to the realisation that talks across the table with respect and honour for each other is the only way ahead, he said.
In this, Rio opined that an early negotiated political solution that is honourable and acceptable to the people and one that upholds the political rights of the Nagas in a democratic manner is the need of the hour.
Resolution of the Indo-Naga conflict will not only bring to an end one of the longest political movements in the entire region but also defuse what has come to be known as the mother of all insurgencies, Rio said
Stating that Nagas want to live in peaceful co-existence and harmony with our neighbours, who will remain neighbours for all times to come, the CM however, said “we also expect our neighbours and friends to understand and respect our position. Such an approach will ensure trust and confidence, strengthening partnerships and development of mutual gains and benefits in the greater interest of the nation.”
“We would like to assure our new Governor that you have our fullest cooperation and support in our collective aspiration of achieving lasting peace. We hope that your coming to Nagaland will pave the way for the breakthrough that we have all been hoping for to ensure a final for a political solution”, Rio added.
Opposition leader, T R Zeliang, speaking on behalf of the NPF Legislature Party, said it was only after over 80 rounds of peace talks spanning several years that the Framework Agreement was signed with R.N Ravi as Interlocutor.
“It is without doubt that his role and contribution towards the Indo-Naga political solution leading to the signing of the Framework Agreement between GoI and the NSCN/GPRN on August 3, 2015, which is now joined by 7 NNPGs, will go down the annals of history as a landmark achievement”, he said.
He expressed conviction that the appointment of Ravi as the Governor will facilitate and speed-up the process of negotiation between the Naga Political Groups and the GoI.
“Raviji understands the pulse of the Naga people and as such, if a final solution is not arrived at during his time, the Indo-Naga political negotiation may go back to square one”, he said.
“I have great hope that the present ongoing dialogues mediated by Raviji, as Governor of Nagaland and as Interlocuter to the Peace talks, will arrive at a conclusion sooner than later”, he said.
Zeliang reiterated that it is the desire of the Naga Peoples’ Front in particular and the Naga people in general that a final settlement to the protracted Indo-Naga issue is hammered out at the earliest time possible.
The Opposition leader also informed the new governor that when it comes to the Naga political issue, there is no ruling or opposition party.
“All 60 Members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly are unanimous regardless of Political Party affiliation which has been manifested in the past as well as the present 13th House”, he said.
As an opposition party, the NPF reassure our fullest co-operation and is ever-ready to extend our contribution, wherever it is needed, Zeliang added.

“With our Honorable Governor now at the helm of the Indo-Naga political negotiations, we are hopeful that the long overdue political issues will soon be settled,” the MP said in a press release issued today.
Tokheho said the people of Nagaland are very fortunate that for the first time in the decades old political negotiations the State Governor will also be the Interlocutor for Naga political negotiations.
NPP Nagaland: The NPP Nagaland State unit also expressed hope that a sincere solution would be made on the Naga issue at the earliest, while also wishing Ravi the very best for all his endeavors as a governor.
Congratulating Ravi on being appointed as the new Governor of Nagaland, the State NPP hoped that with his experience and expertise with the Government and Nagaland in various capacities, he would be able to work for the larger interest of the state and its people.
The NPP Nagaland State unit also conveyed gratitude to PB Acharya, the outgoing Governor of Nagaland for successfully completing his tenure and serving the state.
UNTABA: The United Naga Tribes Association on Border Areas (UNTABA) has also congratulated RN Ravi on his assumption as the Governor of Nagaland.
In a statement, UNTABA acknowledged and appreciated the wisdom of the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for appointing RN Ravi as the Governor of Nagaland, who, it said, has learned the historical intricacies of the Indo-Naga political imbroglio in the last few years as an Interlocutor of the Indo-Naga political negotiation that is undergoing for over the last two decades.
While extending best wishes on his assumption as the head of the Government of Nagaland, UNTABA said his becoming Governor should not be an obstacle in bringing about logical conclusion at the earliest possible time of the ongoing Indo-Naga peace negotiation, which is the expectation of all Naga people and stakeholders.
