Nagaland 2nd most Cancer prevalent State: Dr. K Subramanian

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 30: Dr. Kaushik Subramanian, M.Ch (GI Surgery and GI Oncology), on Saturday said that after Mizoram, Nagaland is the second most cancer prevalent State in the country and eating habits has a role in it as alcohol, tobacco, smoked fish, smoked meat, king chilly, etc. increase the risk factor.

Interacting with media persons after a “clinical meet on recent advances of gastric cancer” with medical professionals here at Faith Hospital, Dimapur, Dr. Subramanian stated that there is a need of awareness among the people in the State when it comes to cancer, the treatment options, and prognosis.
He asked people to not self medicate, and if a person witness unexpected loss in body weight, loss of appetite, blood in vomit, melena, these can be symptoms of underlying cancer and must approach the doctor.
On the occasion, he announced that being November Gastric Cancer Awareness Month, through the month he would provide 50% discounts to people above the age of 50 years who need endoscopy as well as provide free consultations to people diagnosed with gastric cancer.
Earlier, giving a presentation as part of the clinical meet, he mentioned that gastric cancer is the 5th most common cancer and the second most cause of cancer death worldwide and the Northeast India has the highest prevalence of cancer in the country. According to him, the leading sites of cancer in the NE region are nasopharynx, hypopharynx, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, larynx, lung, breast, and cervix uteri. (Page News Service)
