MTLT condemns Mon Rape incident

Dimapur, June 1: The Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) has condemned the rape of a minor girl by a non-local in Mon town and said the very act of violating a young girl on not only one occasion but also on earlier two different occasion is totally infuriating, disgusting and downright inhuman.
“Moreover, the audacity of the accused in threatening the victim ‘of dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone’ is something to be taken quite seriously by the Naga society,” the MTLT said.
While acknowledging that there are many responsible and respectful mainland non-locals living peacefully all over Nagaland, the MTLT appealed to the sensible mainland Indians to root out such anti-socials who tarnish the good image of peace loving non-local business community in the Naga society.
Condemning the action of Rahul Sen, it demanded most stringent of punishment for the accused person. The MTLT also stood in solidarity with all the right-thinking citizens and organizations of Nagaland in their demand for justice in a time bound manner.
The MTLT also reminded that rape is a non-bailable offence under Article 376 of the Indian Penal Code carrying a punishment of ‘rigorous imprisonment for life or not less than 7 years’. In this regard, it demanded the law enforcing agencies to expedite the case accordingly in the greater interest of justice.
It further appealed to the Nagaland State Women Commission to take stock of the situation and rehabilitate the unfortunate victim through appropriate government schemes and programmes so that she can grow up as a normal person despite her trauma. (Page News Service)
