New Delhi, July 9: Asha Devi, the mother of the 2012 Delhi gangrape victim, has said that she had been vindicated once again and hoped for speedy execution of the convicts.
Speaking to reporters outside the Supreme Court, Asha Devi said that the fight is not over though the family has got justice once again.
“There is more fight ahead, but we have got justice once again. We hope that the legal formalities are taken care of and the culprits are taken to the gallows as soon as possible,” Asha Devi told reporters in New Delhi.
A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice R Banumathi and Justice Ashok Bhushan upheld the death sentence awarded to Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma while dismissing their plea to change the capital punishment to life imprisonment.
The fourth death-row convict, Akshay Kumar Singh, had not filed a review petition against the apex court’s 5 May 2017 order.
Asha Devi also called for the tightening of the judicial system by the judiciary so that justice doesn’t get delayed.
“Justice is getting delayed. It’s affecting other daughters of the society. I request judiciary to tighten their judicial system, serve justice to Nirbhaya by hanging them as soon as possible and help other girls and women,” Asha Devi was quoted as saying by ANI.
The victim’s father, Badrinath Singh, said he was happy about justice done to his late daughter but lamented that a lot of time had gone by in the process.
“We knew that review petition will be dismissed. But what next? So much time has gone by and threat to women has gone up in this span. I believe sooner they’re hanged, better it is,” ANI quoted him as saying.
Rohan Mahajan, the lawyer of the victim’s family, said the Centre would have to expedite whatever process was to be followed now.
The convicts still have the option to file a curative petition in the Supreme Court and send mercy petitions to the President of India.
The victim, a 23-year-old physiotherapist, was gang-raped by six persons, including a juvenile, in Delhi in a moving bus on 16 December 2012. She succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital, triggering huge protests across the country. (Courtesy: TS)
