Dimapur, August 4: Mon District administration is taking the lead in taking up socially relevant projects for the betterment of the society setting precedents for other districts of the State to follow.
Mon District administration achieved the distinction of becoming the first district in the State to initiate the ‘Let Live Campaign’, with an exclusive helpline number 6009150274 for reporting cases of illegal pre-natal sex determination.
Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Thavaseelan IAS, told Nagaland Page that the ‘Let Live’ campaign has been initiated under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme and one of the primary objectives of BBBP is to ensure that no sex selection takes place.
“This will automatically improve the sex ratio at birth (SRB). Improving the SRB is the ultimate aim of BBBP. In Mon, we have set up a Helpline where people can confidentially report cases of sex selection. Appropriate action will be taken against the offenders under the relevant provisions of the Pre-Conception and Pre- Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDT),” he said, adding Mon is the first and the only District to have an exclusive helpline in the State for this purpose.
Thavaseelan was optimistic that this humble initiative will create community level awareness about the evil of sex selection and abortion. Studies show that chances of sex selection and elimination of daughters are higher when the families already have one or more daughters, he said.
“PCPNDT Act has very stringent punishment for erring doctors/ owners of clinic / husband and family members. Every offence under the PCPNDT Act 1994 is cognizable, non-bailable and non-compoundable”, the DC said and sought cooperation from the people.
State Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, Ramiah Ramakrishnan told Nagaland Page that he is happy that such an initiative has been taken up by the Mon District administration and it will be beneficial to all.
“Deputy Commissioner Mon Thavaseelan had been performing well with his officers and it is a laudable initiative, one of the best,” Ramiah remarked.
“The initiative taken by Mon District administration is worth emulating by all districts to protect the rights of girl child,” he added. (Page News Service)
